Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI tend to do it as well, especially if what was said is funny. Sometimes I will put ha ha down when I say something sarcastic so they know to take what I am saying as a joke and not seriously; this way they don't get offended. Sometimes, I will put it down when I am asking a serious question that if given the news I don't wanna hear would hurt me, because I've noticed when it comes to touchy subjects a girl might refrain from telling you something you NEED to hear (read) if they think you are asking seriously. However, if I were to ask the same question, but add ha ha after it, they might take it not so seriously and actually answer the question truthfully. Since there won't be a fear of hurting my feelings since they would think I am just messing around. Sometimes, they might answer it, and the answer might hurt, and I can tell that they were hesitant to tell me, and are afraid I might be upset with them over the answer. I will use the "haha" to let them know everything is alright, and that it's not that big of a deal... Keeps the conversation going, makes them feel more comfortable around me, and it's MUCH easier to control my feelings and pain than it is to try and ease her sorrow, regret, and/or embarrassment.

who cares. I think everyone reads way into it. its just a way of spicing up texting. if no one did and "haha's" "lol's" or smiley faces texting would be boring and no one would do it. I hate it when people worry about it or feel weird about it. honestly who cares? its just a way of expression

I don't use them too often, but before I never used them at all, and people/friends took me to be more serious than I actually am, so I throw one in here and there where it's appropriate to lighten the atmosphere of an otherwise more "stern" conversation I suppose. It just makes the overall tone friendlier. I prefer ha ha and smiley faces to lol's though, don't know why.
However, when people constantly throw them in like it's their life-line to the English language in all of its slang and glory, then it's just too much and may lead to giving off the wrong impression (ie. they're more immature and/or less capable of engaging in a deep conversation face-to-face, etc.).
Basically, moderation's best I think. Too many lol's, haha's, rotfl's can translate into a person being "too goofy" and none at all/too few lol's, haha's, etc. can translate into a person being "too serious". Not all the time, but sometimes.00 Reply
usually I'll say something then do that but not JUST the lol/ ha ha in one text.. I find a lot of things funny just naturally even if they don't seem THAT funny to another person.. but it just depends who I'm talking to.. it could be flirty laughing or just a funny convo where we're joking around..

I use emoticons or "haha" to make some messages seem friendly. If I just use plain messages, I tend to come off as hostile. Unless it's someone who knows me very well and understands my sense of humor, I try to convey that things are said light-heatedly to avoid miscommunication and hard feelings.

i'm a girl and I despise it. it's done too often by two-faced people. like one girl wrote, ha ha sounds sarcastic. lol is fine WHEN appropriate but not when you are asking a serious question, or talking aboutsomething serious or when you are hiding that you are mad...it's immature if we are getting along through text/pc and not in person.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yI notice this two. Actually I've read tips on texting guys in a couple of magazines tell girls to use "lols", smiles, and "hahas" when texting to seem more fun and laidback. I saw in one magazine that if you say something awkward just put a lol or a ha ha after it.
Actually I think it works because one time I didn't use any the guy was like "you're so negative" and "why do you sound so depressed?", "lighten up", when I wasn't even saying anything negative or depressing. You guys are weird.12 Reply- +1 y
don't believe everything you read and hear. you will be deceived, and who cares what other guys think. do you want to be just a fling to a guy or do you want to be the real thing? just be you, and if guys don't like that, they are stupid and you don't need a stupid guy by yourself. trust me, the stupid boys are the ones that don't care about themselves or anybody else and won't fight for your love because they have too much pride. you need a smart guy who will know what's he got.
Opinion Owner+1 yUmm...I didn't care about what that guy thought because I didn't like him that much anyway. I'm just using that as an example. I don't blindly believe everything I read and hear but I know a lot of other girls do. I'm just reporting what I read in magazines as they reach a lot people the advice usually comes from some type of dating expert. It's a fact that through text someone can get the wrong impression about your personality. That doesn't necessarily mean the guy is stupid.
Ouch. I'm totally guilty, but have never thought about why.. (OOPS, and almost added a LOL..) See, it's a form of expressing myself I suppose.. Lends a level of intimacy to the message?
20 ReplyWell even in real life I like to laugh or smile so sometimes it is a direct reflection of that. Other times, it is to emphasize that what's being said is a joke since you don't have the benefit of seeing the other person in order to tell.
00 ReplyI include those so that I don't come off as being too serious. And sometimes when I'm playfully insulting someone, I add the "lol" so they'd know I was joking and not being serious

there is no such thing as "playfully insulting someone" that's contradictory. it's plain and simple insulting someone through passive-aggressive behavior, which is fake and mean. it's like saying I playfully punched this guy in the face. and what will happen? I will playfully end up in jail when the cops playfully put the handcuffs on me. life is not a joke. no one will take you seriously like that.
+1 yIts a texting habit I hate when I do it all the time but I don't realize it after the message is sent.

+1 y... I don't know actually. when I do text the hahas and lols, I am saying something funny or trying to lighten the mood or something.
00 ReplyHaha, I realize I do that a lot as well. I guess it's because I'm so used to it that if I don't put it I feel mean/guilty.
00 ReplyTyping ha ha makes the conversation less serious or playful lol. I only get annoyed when people type hahahhahahahaha

+1 ywell that is a really good point! and I'm guilty as charged... but I guess I just want to express that I am happy and that the message isn't supposed to taken in a diffrent way.
00 ReplyHaha sounds sarcastic. I do use a lot of smiley faces and "lols", can't help it.
10 Replyso the person knows I'm not being serious, and I am joking. But I have cut back on all the lols.

+1 yit just shows that we are not mad and its a way of being friendly. I personally hate it when guys don't put haha's or LOL's in some messages because it makes me feel like I'm boring him or something.
00 ReplyTyping 'haha' or 'lol' is easier than typing smiley faces.

Women, what does it mean when a woman writes “lol,” “lmao,” and “haha” attached to most text message she sends you?
