This is my third quarter enrolling in college. During the last two quarters, I passed all my classes with over 100% grades. Thus earned two Presidents Awards, being chosen for the university honors program, and I joined Phi Theta Kappa. At thirty-two years old, I have not been in college for over ten years; this sounds like a great accomplishment. It is. I am very proud of my achievements and grades. It makes me feel accomplished, and I did something I came close to in high school but never got to do. However, the more I think about it, I question myself, Is it all worth it?
The online university I attend has over 50,000 students on campus and online all over the US. I was looking at the list of people who have received the President's Award, Dean's List, and Honor Roll at my school. The list for the last quarter is 66 pages long. Out of 50,000 people, 66 pages seems quite long. It makes me wonder if every student gets one of these awards at one time or another. Don't get me wrong, receiving one of these awards is something to be proud of, but it cheapens it if they are given quite liberally.
Another concern of mine is I feel like all my classes have been too easy to pass. In a way, there's no challenge to it. I took math last quarter, a subject I have always had issues with. However, I ended up acing the class with an A+. But, I felt like the work, in a sense, was too easy, and could be done with easy help. The other classes I took had to do with navigating digital devices and everyday things like email and Microsoft Word. This is stuff I learned in High School. I also had a class about communicating at work using email, voicemail, and other forms of digital technology. Something else I could learn on my own and learned in High School. I need more challenges. I get bored of these classes and find them easy to pass.
This quarter I am taking Economics and Sociology. Maybe these classes will be more challenging for me because they are honors. I am studying Business Administration with a concentration in Hospitality and Tourism management. I want to do well and finish, but I don't want it to be easy either if that makes sense.
