What does it mean to be highly competent in Excel?

That you have experience in using all of the tools and shortcuts on excel to complete a task quickly and effiebcuebtly , from using formulae to calculate mathematics sums quickly from vast amounts of data , to search cell and row numbers to locate data and creat spread sheets of data. Sometimes it would be great if people could not only know what's required to do there tasks on excel but to have the ability to do it quicker by using methods you would gain only from months /years experience is fantastic

well then it means that you are really good with excel, something that I am totally not lol

You know how everything works in excel, you know what you can do with it and how.
I for example only know that you can put numbers in the cells.

Highly competent means you know the program very well and can manipulate for various functions. There are some that only know the basics to do the job, then you have others that can take the other tools and expand the usefulness of Excel further.

I would say going above and beyond the basics. There is always basic Excel classes/lessons which will make you proficient in Excel but taking on Intermediate or Advanced Excel classes will make you better than the average person in it by far!

Also Excel is incredibly useful especially in the business field. I use Excel daily in my job and it is amazing to learn all the tricks and to see how advanced things can actually get.

Can you make tables, filters, IF statements, vlookups, macros etc

Vlookup is like an if statement, it retrieves data from a table. best thing to do is go to excel and type it in the formula bar. A macro is a little more complicated, its basically a recording of what you do, for example, hit record macro, [copy all data from a field into a table on another page, add a new line and delete the data in the field] then stop the macro and assign it to a submit button on the page. This will copy all the filled out data on a page and put it into a database and then delete the form for the next person, all at the touch of a button. Hope this makes sense, if not, google or YouTube it :P I'd ask them what they mean by "highly competent" if you can't, just say yes, then find out and learn to do it.

That you know how to use excel. In some jobs thats really useful, some companies even pay you more/give you the job just because you're good withe excel
