As for voice acting, I watched a lot of cartons and t. v. when I was growing up and was always trying to mimic the sound effects, accents and voices that I was hearing so, I've just always been good at it and I still do it quite a lot around the house every day just to goof around and have a bit of fun. Last night, I wound up talking like a hillbilly for well over an hour just because that voice popped out and I decided to continue using it for a while.
As for drumming, they say practice makes you better when it comes to music but, at least the last 8 to 10 years that I was in my band, I never practiced at all because they were rehearsing way too far away from my house and I didn't have any way to get there but, I still played just as well, if not better. At the moment, I haven't seen or touched my drums in 6 years, the band broke up 21 years ago as of this coming Thursday but, if we got back together today, I could STILL play all of those songs we wrote with no problem!! I'm sure I could still play entire gigs blindfolded.
As for the work I did in the print shops or other jobs I've had, it's just a matter of using logic and physics (to a degree) and figuring out ways to make your work easier and allowing you to do it faster and better. We used to get an order every Feb. to make over 36,000 calendars and they had to be assembled by hand, one month at a time and everything had to be shipped out by Oct.! We were JUST making it WITH a bunch of other people helping to make them but I eventually came up with ways to do it all by myself a lot faster and even have a bit of extra time to spare by the time Oct. rolled around!
In `89, I got a job working in a guy's basement inflating mylar balloons and sealing up 36 per shipping case. He expected me to get a full gross (144) balloons done per hour. By the end of the first week, I'd figured out a way to do at least 2 gross per hour and he was THRILLED!! I got two raises within the first week!!

    • Well enjoying it makes it a lot less like work and more like your interest. Hobby? That's where working 16 hours nonstop or all weekend becomes a choice and not a requirement. Ya just gotta know the answer.
    • Have a natural aptitude is a great help. For instance a statistician who sucks at math is probably gonna struggle to be great. A person with zero people skills probably shouldn't try their hand at being a counselor. Someone who faints or pukes at the sight of blood may want to steer clear of the medical field.
    • You will be required to make sacrifices in your personal life. Being great at anything takes time effort and a commitment. That comes at a cost. To think otherwise is delusional. Vacations, parties, time with family, all of it is on the table.
    • Persistence not stupidity. No surrender. Unless you've come to a dead end. Then run like hell to another approach.
    • Resilience in the face of obstacles and failure.
    • Technical competence.
    • Vision. Asking "what if" and then imagining what that looks like instead of just turning the same old crank for 30 years.
    • Networking. You don't get there by yourself. You will be helped along the way by others. Still others will need your help. Build a community around yourself. Speed up the journey.
    • Sharing. Put your ideas out there and shamelessly adopt good ideas from other people. You don't need to do it all yourself. Be humble enough to recognize greatness when you see it.

@OneViewpoint I think there's a lot of fear of what the answer could be and that's why people won't ask themselves that question.

um... I just need to know how to plant and harvest and shovel shit when it's time to clean the chicken house. Other than that, when I have to run our little farm stand I just have to stand around and smile and look cute.

Commitment to being the best which requires time. You do this by being able to admit to yourself that there's always room to grow, feedback good or bad is a gift, challenge status quo, and be open minded when working with others. It takes a village so whether you're an individual contributor management, owner, whatever, the way people perceive is you important.

A great deal of knowledge gained through years of education, substantial persistence, a tolerance for partial results, the ability to engage in deep, critical thinking, and most importantly, empathy and compassion for your patients.
