Is hair colour subjective data or objective data?

I need help with my psychology homework, I believe its qualitative data but I'm not sure if objective or subject.

My friends are stuck on the question too.

I think subjective because everyone can see someones hair colour as a different shade of the colour so technically we won't all see brown hair as the same exact shade. Also my hair is brownish blond, so 50% of people would call it brown and the other 50% would call it blonde...

So is hair colour subjective.

My friend argues that it is objective because everyone will see the hair colour as only one colour but I don't know.. I could be overthinking this... Please help

I think colour is both objective and subjective.

Colour or hair colour palette is objective. For instance, the red colour palette is #4138. Colour palette is objective because it’s universally agreed and accepted by people working with or on colours. Hence, if I asked you what’s the colour palette for red, I expect the answer to be #4138.

However, colour or hair colour is subjective. People interpret colours differently as you’ve rightly said. Some see it as red, others call it light red, deep red, or dark red, or ox blood.

The colour data doesn’t change; however, the perception and processing of the data vary from one person to another. The subjective perception is caused by many factors, which can be group into external and internal factors.

External factors: light can affect the perception of hair colour. The surface on which the colour is rubbed can affect its colour. For example, you could notice a slight difference in brown colouring applied on black, grey, blond, brunette, and white hair.

The angle or distance from which a person is standing can affect colour perception. Some colours perceived at an angle is black but as you get closer to it, the colour is silver.

Internal factors: your mood affects how you see colours. Your education and past experiences affect your interpretation of colour data. Of course we know of the condition called colour blind that affects perception of colours.

Unless you're colourblind you'll see hair as almost exactly the same colour. If it came down to it you could objectively measure the colour with a machine though.
