Is it weird that I’m 24 and just starting my 4 year college program now?

Be honest, if you were an 18-22 year old university student with a 24 year old in your class who is just starting their college education would you think that’s weird or have any kind of judgement toward it? I’m 24 years old and when I tell my classmates my age, they react as if they’re shocked and confused. I’ve noticed I’m treated different after telling people my age. They tell me they assumed I was 19 or 20 and then usually don’t talk to me again. I know to a younger person it probably seems weird to have someone older in their class, but omg it’s not like I’m 40. (No judgement to 40 year olds!!) It’s so hard to make friends. We’re all adults, in college, so why does my age matter? It’s been really hard to find roommates too because throughout my search, nobody wants to live with someone who’s older than them. Yes, I actually had a girl tell me she didn’t want me to sublease for her because her 21 year old roommates would be uncomfortable with a 24 year old roommate. I don't know, I kinda get it, but kinda don’t. Why are people like this? Is there a valid explanation for this kind of prejudice? For those who are wondering why I’m starting college at 24: I technically started college when I was 19 but had no clue what I was doing and had no ambition so I dropped but now I know exactly what I want to do and have a clear goal.
