If you were in my position, which job would you accept and why?

Basically I’m a student and have been working part- time as a barista for 4 years in a big chain. Quit after being fed up and no career progression. And got accepted by two jobs.. but now sure which one

Job 1) another barista job but higher position with same pay in a nicer place with possibility to become assistant manager soonish. 20 mins away, but possibly boring and not much to do.

Job 2: (I love gym and bodybuilding) a bodybuilding gym (not mine) to work in reception, late shifts, same pay but an hour away. I’ll prefer environment better but getting there is a pain and late hours

The gym job sounds like a better fit for you personally. If it were me, I would consider the commute to be the biggest obstacle. For that, if I could take public transport to and from work it would be preferable and my reasoning is that if I spent an hour on a bus, it wouldn't have to be 'wasted' time. I could read or study on the bus, so that would give me about 45 minutes each way of studying, total 1.5 hours every time I went to work. If I had to drive, I would probably pass this job up, because I don't want to tack on 2 hours of unpaid driving and fuel costs and exposure to liability (accidents) every time I take on a shift.

Also, I'm thinking if you work at the gym, you get to use it for free, right? So you can dump your current gym and just use this one. Also, working at the gym has some great perks like you get to take classes for free and if you are closing or opening, you can work out in the gym while closed when no one else is around (which I loved doing when I worked at a gym). There could also be opportunities if you wanted to become a trainer either for personal training or teaching/leading fitness classes. I don't know what you want to do or your goals are, but seems like this could be a good fit.

The second barista job sounds good if you are really interested in becoming a manager, but another thing I would consider is this business is usually faster paced, you are on your feet all day hustling and making drinks, it's exhausting. It doesn't get easier when you are an assistant manager or manager, it's almost MORE work because you have additional responsibilities and also have to often cover when it's very busy or you have employee issues.

What are your long term goals? What are you in school for? Honestly both these jobs sound just okay, and I would be looking for something with better pay and a better skillset as making coffee or handing out towels are not that marketable as you move on in your career.

Thanks for the detailed responce. I get where you’re coming from.. firstly studying law to become a lawyer so theese are temps and I know gym job sounds better now but as I said it finnished very late so I’ll be home midnight by the time I travel back etc. Also don’t want it dump my current gym as I love the people there etc

As for other job I would love to be manager and convenience is important but again I’m not interested in it.

So basically now I really don’t know haha

Well if you are a law student, I would seek experience in that field. Perhaps ask some lawyers what they did through school. I imagine typically they did clerical or research work, but many other jobs would develop helpful skill sets, such as billing or executive assistant.

How are you a barista when you always used to brag about being She Hulk IRL and wanted to become a superhero lawyer and whatnot? Baristas are supposed to be small, cute, and nice!

Anyway, you should not be another Dave Barista. Just become a personal trainer who only accepts male clients six feet or taller. That's what you *really* want to do anyway.

Personally I would choose the first one purely for the hours, travel convenience and promotional opportunities.

I noticed it's a reception job but I want to be close to the environment that makes me good at what I want to be good at. That's just a gateway anyway. And even starting from that, that means you can interact with people into the same interests and you can grow from their knowledge.

I already spend hours a day at my bodybuilding gym as it is that’s why don’t want it to be an over kill even if this is a different one. Also as I said it’s long to travel to and complicated it get to but no clue. Both are temp jobs whilst at uni

I like the one that aligns better with your interests. Take it from me as a living example. I got a job now that isn't aligning well with my interests. And I'm not so happy. I'm not growing. I'm just doing my thing; it's just a job. I want to grow.

I'd say follow your passion, but that job sounds more like a future headache. Hold out for something better and keep law on your side.
