Why do people have so much ego?

I went to this dinner and I feel like people were looking down on me because most of them were doing egineering and medical research at university. They really made me feel bad about myself even tho i studied at university in marketing

Those with degrees in STEM subjects consider themselves a cut above the rest.

Say marketing and "cold calls" with sales pitches comes immediately to mind.

Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering.
Master of Engineering, Materials Science.

Because, whatever it takes for someone to feel good about themselves.
