Really you can be self-taught. You should probably look into what you need to be insured, talk to some local gyms and ask what they are looking for. You could also start your own fitness outside of a gym.
There is a woman here who does a local Zumba class, which she has built over the years. Now, she does 5 classes/week, has over 100 students who all pay $15 each time (that's over $1500 a class for her X 5 = $7500/week earned). She rents out a basketball court and it's filled up with students.I don't know for sure, but I think to become a qualified Zumba instructor doesn't take much. this article says it costs about $300 and one day of training.
That's just one option. The gym I worked at allowed me to self-teach and put together a cardio kickboxing program. I could have done spin classes if I wanted. Great choice for a fitness enthusiast, why not get paid to stay fit?
If you are talking about weight training, or more personalized training, you can go the official route and get a degree in physical education, kinesiology, that sort of thing. Or you can get a course like the Zumba route. Or just self-taught and go solo. My little brother does that while also having a full time job as a gym general manager.

Fitness trainers and instructors who are interested in management positions should get a bachelors degree in exercise science, physical education, kinesiology, or a related subject. Experience often is required in order for a trainer or instructor to advance to a management position in a health club or fitness center.

The gym makes the difference. My mother worked in that industry for a decade. Make sure you do it at a gym that provides the proper training and certifications. In addition, provides an actual compensation package and not just a low hourly rate.
