When a lawyers work at a law firm, do they still find their own clients or does the business bring in the clients only?

Like if there is an associate at a law firm, can he/she bring in a client of their own or does the business they work under the only way to obtain clients? I’m not a lawyer or have experience but I’m wondering for personal reasons. Thanks.

@OlderAndWiser is the best source of info for this, but from what I understand, partners primarily bring in the clients. Now if you show potential as a rainmaker and/or have contacts and can bring in new clients as an associate, that would help you make partner.
