It depends on the job. A high school diploma or GED will work fine when applying to be cashier at Dollar Tree. Other jobs require a 4 year degree and many specify a graduate degree as being "desirable" (which means that you better have one). In instances such as pure research you won't even be considered if you don't hold a doctorate or PhD.

I hold a Batchlor of Science in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineer, and a Master of Engineering in Materials Science.

Both are degrees are extremely useful within my field, but of little or no use in other branches of engineering, such as Telecommunications engineering.

If you have never went to college before, try looking on the website of your local community college for their certificate programs. See if any interest you. Some of them can be completed in one year. You can get free federal Pell grants and complete a certificate program (or even an associate's degree) for free with no student loans. Maybe even get a couple certificates in different fields so you are qualified for more jobs.

Academic performance and skills matter more than your degree. A surgery fellow who married a Harvard graduate studied Spanish and foreign languages before getting accepted into a master of sciences program where she did pre med work and is now a medical student. I also know guys who studied philosophy and make millions are a computer sales man to corporations.

If you're not doing anything STEM, I wouldn't even bother going to college. STEM things will always be hiring and paying well though.
