I thought I was about to be fired, so I told my boss I was quitting. She said she was actually about to promote me, did I screw up?

Basically what I asked. She was shocked and after she said that (on Friday) she asked why I was thinking she wanted to fire me and why I was so ready to quit. I tried to brush it off and talk about the promotion but she said we'd talk about it on Monday and sent me home.

Update; I did not get the promotion and now my boss said she s thinking of laying me off because I wanted to quit

If you were about to be fired & you told your boss your were quitting & your boss said she was actually about to promote you I would of said I was just kidding about quitting.

Yeah, it certainly didn't cause a good impression. You're in risk of getting fired and probably she won't give you the promotion if you stay

I think yes you did hurt yourself. But if you were thinking of leaving anyway why would a promotion change that?

You might have poisoned it. If I were about to promote someone and she said she was quitting, even due to a misinterpretation, I would consider others for the promotion.
