We have a work function coming up.
I was put into a group where I don't know anyone & the location was 1 hour away.
So I went to someone in another team asking if it was ok to join their group instead because the location is 15 minutes away. I didn't know the person I went to was her manager.
My manager spoke with me today and scolded me.
She was like:
I found it disrespectful that you went to my manager when I told you what group you where in. It's due to budget costs.
Then I said " I didn't know he was your manager and about budget."
Then she said "The budget is none of your business and it seemed to me you just went to him to get what you want."
I said I wasn't trying to be malicious, I went to him because I told. you this the first time & he was approachable.
Then she said "I don't want to dwell on this"
Then left it at that.
I told my outside friend and she thinks I should go to HR.
Would you?

I could be wrong but honestly doesn’t sound like you have much ground to stand on. She scolded you, end of story. I don’t see it as being racist, or belittling, or whatever you may think it is. What did your friend tell you as far as why she thought you should go to HR? What did she tell you to tell HR? Besides doesn’t even sound as though you tried to go through your chain of command. Me sing your boss first, then go from there depending on what the answer was. So yes as a supervisor I would feel as though it was disrespectful.
You have no grounds to ho to HR. Your boss was not disrespectful. Your boss scolded you for not following instructions, and trying to make up your own. Learn from this. Your boss directs your activities at wirk, whether you like it or not.
If you can't take that, then good luck finding another job.
