Do you tip when you pick up a delivery order?

I love this Persian restaurant and frequently order from them, but they are nowhere near my house. When I am super motivated, I will hop in my car and drive for a pickup which with traffic can be a 45 minute to an hour drive. When I get there, out pops this iPAD asking me to tip. I feel this is so incredibly ridiculous and I see it more and more where you are your own delivery driver, and yet, they want you to tip 10, 20, 30%.

And before anyone hops on some high horse about tips, I eat there too and tip usually 20% and obviously tip when I go through a delivery service.

I do not tip when I stop for take out or when I pick up the food myself. That would be like tipping the person at the McDonald's car window or like tipping the check out clerk at a market.
Tipping is for the server at a restaurant. But with take out, there is no server and they don't have to bus my table.
Tipping for food isn't automatic.

Unless the service is amazing, no , I don't tip to pickup my food. However, I will actually tip someone who delivers my food. I'm someone who worked in retail for a long time and daily I saw the worst and best of people. I think you should generously tip people who are in certain types of service jobs. Waiters, bartenders, barbers to name a few. Obviously, if the service is terrible don't tip or make the tip minimal. Think of it as positive reinforcement for a good service. Positive reinforcement isn't just for children or dogs. It works for pretty much everything.

So, if you pick it up, it’s not a delivery order. It’s a pick up order. Delivery is where you pay someone else to deliver it.
And yes, I tip at any opportunity for both pick up and delivery orders. I have a job where I work for tips, I know how essential that income is.

I wasn't being condescending, I was bearing clear. Tips are donations. There is no obligation. It is by choice that someone tips. The place of business sets the price of the service, and then it is up to each customer to decide if they will donate more to certain people. Well, it used to always be to certain people. Some businesses have decided you aren't allowed to tip to certain people and it is instead given to everyone. Hate those places. Anyway, I'm being clear about what is happening and genuinely curious why you do it.
And you answered that. You enjoy it, and people donate so much to you, you actually do make enough money. Thank you

the whole thing is so crazy now i'm just on auto-tip at 25% and everyone seems to be happy. the only time i'll take it away is when the service is abysmal for no reason, and even then i'm very careful about what goes on near where i live

When I pickup an order, there has been no wait service. I did not dine there. The only people involved in my order were the cooks and that cashier, neither of which work for tips.

So, no; I do not tip, and I specifically write "pick up" or "take out" on the receipt. I'm not going to tip someone for the monumentally difficult task of spinning a tablet around.

Tipping culture is out of control in this country, all so that owners can pay their employees crap. It's not my responsibility to subsidize their cheap ass.

When I am provided good service, by an actual waiter/waitress, I tip very well, but only then.

It's not a delivery order if you pick it up yourself, it's a takeout order. Tipping used to not be an option on takeout orders and you just picked it up and not tip. Now it's all this electronic bullshit you're screwed, especially if it's the same cashier every time and it's a family-run business. Nobody's going to remember you had a big chain restaurant but at a small family owned place where it's the same people every time you go, they're going to think you're a cheap bastard. I recommend you tip.

The other day, I went to a pet store my wife buys our mutt's "special" dog food at. It was over $100 for a 40lb bag, that I carried to the counter. When she rang it up, there was a pop up window for a tip, just like you explained! I almost told her to fuck right off!

I despise tipping. The business sets the price of the goods. I pay for those goods. WHY THE HELL should I have to VOLUNTARILY BE NEARLY FORCED to give some amount over that? If the workers need more money, then the EMPLOYER should be paying them more. It is not on me to keep an employer's staff happy. The only times I ever tip is when I give in to pressure from my parents or I'm on an early date with a woman, because 99% if not 100% of them will think lesser of me if I don't tip.

I dont ever order to go anything. Lately at a healthy smoothie place i frequent I've been tipping 200% to a gal i like that told me her schedule. I've found that most woman only see me as a dollar sign so i act the way they conditioned me. If i ordered to go i would have almost no social interraction with anybody.
