This is total crap. People who go to college signed a document promising to pay back the loan. The fact is that not everyone should go to a four year college. Many people who graduate from college in the US are basically idiots. They graduate with bullshit degrees that do not enable them to secure employment. (business, history, women's studies, etc). Unless someone is pursuing a field requiring a graduate degree (medicine, law) or the field requires certification (engineering), four year college is a scam. Most people should either start their own business or purse a very lucrative trade (a two year endeavor with cheap or zero tuition).

The Democrats (of which I belong) have this totally wrong. When you listen to Republicans, they will tell you correctly that mandatory free education is a waste. They are right. We need to recognize that not everyone has intellect or desire for four year college. At the start of 10th grade, students should begin formalized training and apprenticeship (supervised, graded, objective goals) in an industry (electrical, plumbing, automotive repair, etc). When these student graduate high school, they will have jobs paying 60K or more at age 18 while their "smart" classmates" will go to undergrad, then grad and amass 200K in debt so they can get jobs as doctors earning 250k when they are 28 years old (ten years after graduating high school).

1. I don't like the whole "eff you, I got mines" mentality people have. If I go to the theater to watch a movie that just released and pay $19 to see it, I'm not gonna complain about people waiting to rent it for cheaper or see it for free on tv later on. I would be happy for them so that way didn't have to spend as much as I did.

2. Inflation has always existed and is currently high right now. College has always been expensive and unaffordable for many people so what's the difference? That's why a lot of people don't and can't even attend.

3. How? Did you forget people still have bills and need to pay for things like food, gas, rent, insurance etc. You're still going to need to work for those things regardless if students loans are payed off.

4. You mean the same government that people are already complaining about cause they've made housing, bills, medicine, gas etc. already too expensive and out of reach for many average, working class Americans? No, they should have the IRS take over collection on student loans and consider any behind payments to be the same as not paying taxes.

I do however support letting them put it in bankruptcy, they can file it and like everything else you own in bankruptcy, you give your degree back. Have it stay on their credit report for 14 years and disqualify them from ever getting tax payer backed student loans in the future.

If "fairness" was a concern on the government's part, they'd gate voting behind obligations for EVERYONE: don't pay taxes beyond a certain threshold? Can't vote. Never been called to jury duty? Can't vote. A woman, and therefore immune to the threat of battle slavery? Can't vote- unless you join voluntarily, then maybe.

The bigger issue is that it would cause already-perpetually-skyrocketing college costs to EXPLODE, since they'd KNOW loans were going to be paid off. NOBODY would be able to afford to go to college without getting loans, and the government would be handed even MORE power. We'd be one ambitious politician away from a Chinese-style social credit system.

It is, however, downright disingenuous of you to tell young people to simply "work their way up the ladder" when that's usually not even POSSIBLE anymore; few jobs beyond the most rudimentary will even *consider* applicants for non-entry level positions if they don't have degrees. I don't think it's bad to take help when it's offered. If anything I think this kind of opportunity will push a lot of the graduates to work harder to make sure they keep out of debt, instead of becoming complacent because they don't see an end to the payments anytime soon anyway. Granted, some will take advantage of it irresponsibly. But those people wouldn't have paid back their loans in the first place. They would have put it off with more loans. Cause they are irresponsible. Having a loan paid off doesn't make you less responsible, it frees you up to be more of what you already were, ambitious or complacent.

If you're mad it wasn't offered to you or others, that's fair. College shouldn't be so expensive that most people have to get in debt in the first place to attend. And that has put a lot of people years behind in their path to financial stability. That's not the current students fault tho, and them refusing help in this case, isn't gonna fix it.

If you're one of those "it was hard for us so it should be hard for you" types well that's backwards to how it's supposed to work. Aren't people hoping to make things better in the world? Wouldn't it be a good thing if the cost of college went down and people could actually afford it? Yes, the government should (in any way shape or form) cancel student debt, but perhaps do so in phases. This should only be done if they also make higher education either free, or affordable (to where someone with a part time job could pay tuition, shared rent, etc.)- this would eliminate the nonsensical degrees, bc colleges would be working off a smaller budget.

I also don't care about those who paid off their student debt before we did- the cost of education was significantly less, and they probably got a lot more for it (in terms of quality, and a bachelors degree used to get you a solid job; now, you'll be lucky to get hired at Target).

So, we have bigger loans, for less quality education, with less chance to actually get a job to pay it off. This is after hearing our entire life that the key to success was education, got flooded with school advertisements, pressured by everyone else going, and given tens of thousands in loans with absolutely no credit profile- if this isn't predatory lending I don't know what is.

Would your middle age self be upset if they got rid of income tax? Sure, you'd benefit, but what about all the old people who had to pay income tax their whole life? Or how about someone who smokes weed not having to go to jail? Is this fair to the other people who were arrested? Surely you'd prefer to pay income tax for the next couple decades out of FAIRNESS, right?

Teachers are paid, as are the utilities. However, the government (i. e. tax monies channeled through the govt) pays for this, at an economically sound price in order to educate the citizenry. But (as you may not know) our economy cannot thrive off high school graduates alone- Universities/ colleges are needed. Thus, by the same principle that permits primary/ secondary education to be "free," one can reasonably argue that formal education can/ should also be free.
Now, does this mean that any major (e. g. gender studies) should be a cost incurred by the government? No, but business, IT, engineering, medical, and a host of other professions are needed, and those who practice these professions pay far more back in taxes, and greatly benefit the society as a whole; so, it would easily provide a positive ROI.
Sure, we can institute exams, which will dictate who qualifies to go to these "free" formal education programs, but if high school did it's job and prepared individuals for the next step, this transition could be seamless, and the culmination of a multi-year development at the individual level, where a student (let's say) has shown interest in marketing, taken several graphic design classes, and is supported towards completing a marketing degree after graduating.

While I'm not someone who believes the government taking over something makes it function better necessarily (it often doesn't), when it comes to education central governments have almost always been heavily involved- it's what the state does.

@joeldalton That's one of the reasons, possibly the preliminary reason- that the government has backed student loans, making them easier to take out (and easier to give), in turn providing colleges with steady and increasing revenue, but unlike a business, colleges do not distribute dividends from surplus funds, they grow larger.
The other reason is the rapid expansion of the bureaucracy (not just the recent addition of a DEI department at every campus), the cost of intellectual property (colleges pay millions getting access to scholarly journals), and the construction of more impressive campuses (and amenities) to compete with other colleges to attract students. From someone who has taught college classes, most instructors/ professors DO NOT make much money, but these staff represent only a small fraction of the bloated institutions colleges have become.

Truck drivers need a CDL-A course, which costs at least $5000, and the $90,000 figure is for OTR drivers, not local drivers. I was an operations manager at a trucking company for a year, and these people are home maybe a week a month if they're lucky... Hardly the sweet deal you make it out to be.
To get certified and licensed as a plumber takes you nearly as long as it does for a degree, and it certainly costs money- although there are many good programs at community colleges.

I was saving up to buy a house and had perfect credit but because of a natural disaster the government decided since some people couldn't afford to pay their bills they should ban credit bureaus from reporting anybody's credit for 2 months. So that took 2 months of credit history off of my record. See, they couldn't just wipe the record of the deadbeats because that would be too easy for banks to use against deadbeats. Anyhow it cost me something cause it shortened my credit history as I had just finished re-building my credit from scratch.
