Isn't ir inappropriate to ask someone's relationship status in a job interview?

I applied with a startup and they asked me if I was married or in a relationship, which striked me as odd. I reluctantly answered because you can't really dodge question in an interview if you want to be successful... but afterwards I asked my recruiter why the interviewer did that and she said it was to get an idea of someone's personality.. Seems kinda weird.

Very much so, outside of insurance information and such, but thats done once you're hired. But during an interview that's a no go.

Very- discrimination on that basis is illegal, at least here in the US.

Merital status is indeed a standard question on applications and interviews.
