Alternative way of living for a year?

Im sick of the city life, im sick of technology, vehicles, stupid people obsessed with things that don't matter, the rat race, under-achiever supervisors at work giving me a hard time because I went to university and they spent their entire life at this shit job.

Im wondering if anyones ever lived in the countryside, on a farm, a more natural place or some other place away from this hell we call 'society', I don't plan on giving university a 2nd shot i'd rather just get away from this shit and live differently for a while once I have the money to make that move. Are there any notable places worth staying for a while with more simple and laid-back people?

Visiting the amish is a fun and non-permanent option.


Off-grid living is another option.


Seeking acceptance from a hippie tribe is yet another option.


Van/RV life exists as well.

Thanks for the recommendations, I think what i'll do is visit more remote places as a holiday to get a feel for them before making any drastic changes

I know a lady who did that and lived in her van. She worked jobs such as waitressing. Hard to make much over minimum wage though in the kinds of places that you describe.

Yeah I wouldn't mind a simple job to pay bills, but i'd really like to live somewhere for free, sick of 60% - 70% of my money going to rent, bills and groceries, why can't I just grow my own food? XD
