How exactly does college work? If you want a major in math, do you have to take other core classes like highschool?

Yes you do have to take a lot of other general education requirements. You have to take history classes, English (if in the US), probably psychology and/or sociology. A lot of colleges want you to take a public speaking class. The list can go on from there.
