I never went by this. So, someone goes far out of town to go to a "big name" medical center, only to get basically the same treatment. Only by a doctor who smiles more when he explains the same thing.

There are exceptions though, like when having a surgery that is very specialized. And I'd imagine there are other exceptions.

If you're talking about medical school, generally you don't have a plethora of options. My mom went to Stony Brook and a friend went to Albert Einstein. They're not bad, but they're not the best. That's because those were the best they got accepted to. So it really doesn't matter what the best is, it matters which one you get accepted to. Let's say you go to UCLA or another big-name one with a good medical school. There is no guarantee you will get into their medical graduate school, in fact, there is an equal chance you will as someone who went to someplace like Northern Michigan or Slippery Rock. Graduate school is an entirely different entity than undergrad, and generally you don't have as much choice as you may think.

@Twalli I was assuming at first that the asker was referring to where to go as a patient. But I get what you are saying about going to a medical school as a student. Back when I was in college pre-med students, if they actually got the grades, would apply to about ten schools. I knew one guy who got 3 interviews, but didn't get accepted to any. A year later he did get accepted though. So your mom is a physician?

Was, she retired after getting the COVID-19 shot. She planned to retire earlier, but figured that she'd wait until she could get the shot

@Twalli What kind of doctor was she before she retired? How old was she when she retired? Just curious. You don't hear from guys who had moms who were doctors all that often.

GI, I was 29 (turned 30 that May).
She had a saying that I pretty much live by "everyone's shit smells the same". I figured she'd know better than most people.

She was 63, because her birthday is on January 13, so her birthday passed before her second shot.

@Twalli Did your mom have her own office or was she part of a medical group? Just curious to hear from someone who grew up with a doctor mom. I worked in medical for a long time and I trained with woman medical students back in the day. I was always curious as to what their lives were like later on after medical school and residency. (I'm not a physician but I worked in the medical field.) I remember one 3rd year resident had a crush on me but I just didn't go for her because I just simply wasn't attracted to her. I looked her up years later and she had a son in medical school. lol

She started in a practice with other doctors. Then changed where she worked and did the same. Both of those were multidisciplinary, where all the doctors are of different specialities. Then she went into private practice and ended as the main partner with another GI doctor and nurse practitioner.
Funnily enough I am applying to be a biller and coder where she first worked when she switched hospitals.
