Law School or Med School?

I am very curious to know which is a better investment. Career growth potential? Cost? Admission?

I don't think admission would be my biggest issue, I am a seasoned public speaker, as well as an honors student. I do debate, but at the same time, I excel in science. The big issue is that I am not rich lol. On a surface level, which would you choose?

Personally, I am leaning towards a law career as studying the law and government comes very easy to me, and every year more and more people try to get into med school. Also, my parents are friends with many doctors and lawyers, and lawyers seem to have more autonomy and free time and are less depressed lmao

I said med, but it really depends on you and what you enjoy. I have friends who are both, but my lawyer friends do not have "more autonomy and free time", but also it might depend on the type of person and the work they are doing. One of my friends is deputy attorney general and seems to work a lot. Another friend is his twin brother and works in politics, also works a lot but seems to have a bit more free time. They also have a younger brother who is a doctor, and seems to have immense amounts of free time. But I also think it has to do more with their personalities.

I myself am in an RN (ADN) program, and will probably apply to a concurrent BSN program in a couple months. The cost is minimal, and actually my work would pay for it, if I decided to keep working for them for another 2 years. But I will likely switch jobs once I have my RN license. I don't think you need to be rich, you just need to manage your money wisely and live simply, work hard. You can DM me if you want more specific financial advice or info, but the long and the short of it is the job I have now is close to entry level, but it is enough to get me through RN school and have money to spare/save. Once I have my RN, I will have plenty of money to save, get my master's degree, and also vacation appx 3 months of every year. Once I have my master's, if I want to continue, I can get my PhD (already making enough with the ADN RN license to pay for that, but with a MDN I will be making even more). With the doctorate, I can easily make twice the RN salary.

It's just a step by step process, each step paying and paving the way for the next. There is probably something similar in a law degree pathway. I think medicine has more variety of options, and a better overall median salary level for most occupations. I think being a lawyer you could make even more money if you were a top notch and sought after lawyer, but on average I don't think they are all making huge piles of money. I may make more as an RN with a couple years of school than many lawyers who went to school for three times as long.

both are very different things as well.. what it is really that you would like to be doing? that should be a deciding factor for you

I was on my varsity Mock Trial team as a freshman, so I definitely excel more in that compared to other people I guess lol

it should be about who you really are and what would want to do for the next stage of your life

if you really like to help people, maybe med school is for you

Lawyers help people too. But they have very different career focuses than doctors. You can be a patent lawyer if you like science.

at the end of the day it really is about the individual, me for example... the one reason why I didn't go med-school was because of my mild germophobia and OCD tendencies... one sneeze at the surgery room, and I'd have to start all over again... even if we were by the end of an eight hour procedure... lol

Law school. As a med student and new doctor, they treat you absolutely horribly. You will work 36 hour shifts, you will be so tired you almost crash your car commuting, you will be constantly exposed to disease. With exception for an annual checkup, most people only seek medical attention when they are in pain, angry, or very close to being rude.

You also have patients who know nothing, and yet demand to waste your time over dumb shit like a common cold because they refuse to listen to a nurse of medical assistant who has more experience than you.

As a lawyer, you may be as equally flooded by productivity demands, but your minutes aren't as monitored as much as much as a doctors, where you NEED to sign off on hourly and daily charts assessments for hundreds of patients a week.

Law school is not about debate and public speaking, it’s about doing manual data processing with high accuracy, attention to detail and tolerance for complexity and less than 2% of your time is spent defending your case in court, your basically an advanced administrative assistant and an extremely high percentage of lawyers get disbarred and banned from practicing law during their careers and it’s also dangerous because people might try to kill you for defending cases they height and your ability to get hired is related to how physically attractive you can remain, and this is true regardless of how old you are.

If money is your goal:

Law school, because there is way better career growth potential. Work under a law firm as an associate, stand out, gain connections, then start your own business if you don't make it big there.

Source: Businessman with plenty of clients who were former lawyers. They ditched their lawyer jobs in their 30s because at the end of the day if you're not running your own law firm or your own clinic, more likely than not you'll just earn peanuts.

Law school is not as big of an investment but being a doctor today is not the big moneymaker that it was. A lot of doctors are retiring or going into research. Lawyers can make a lot of money and can go into politics as well.

I would not choose either unless you are passionate beyond average people. Both are a serious grueling commitment. Many years of study, and no pay until the very end. Not my type of life at all. At least lawyer is a little bit easier.
