How do I talk to debt collectors that I can't pay the debt?

SAY NOTHING.

They record what you say and anything you say that commits to paying or acknowledges the debt may be used against you in a lawsuit to get the money.

Trust me, these people are profound assholes. Their job is to get the money and it doesn't matter to them how you feel about it. It's just like mob movies in which a guy comes to collect and, if you don't pay, they break an arm or something.

ONLY DEAL WITH THEM THROUGH SNAIL MAIL.

But you are often able to write off a lot of debts you cannot pay. Hence it's best to talk to advice centres first on what help is available. Then talk to the debt collections. some will even do it on your behalf.

Don't talk to them until you get independent impartial advice.

I've always told them they have the wrong number. For example, I would tell them you've reached Dr Jenkins's office, and got the wrong number.
