I was lucky. I loved cameras since before I can remember. My earliest memory was when I was in the 1st grade and I wanted to have a computer so I could make videos.

My dad was a programmer, left out a bunch of parts and told me if I could put them together and get it running, it would be mine. I don't think he expected I was actually listening to him all the times he told me what they all did.

I would record everything from family vacations, to my mom cooking to little stories I came up with.

Then I had a friend who's parents were TV writers and that was the beginning of me realizing I could persue this as a career.

I worked my ass off. I exchanged many nights out with friends for staying at home learning after effects or practicing filming or taking on a job of some kind. It was hard, discouraging and painful but incredibly rewarding experience.

Now I've got a list of accomplishments under my belt that I'm proud of and have every intention of having many more.

The vanity of Work as fun, good use of time, or fulfilling is misguided and a dead end at Disappointment. It doesn’t mean we can’t have fun:

    1. ā€œCursed is the ground; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat plants of the field.
By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust and dust you shall return (Genesis 3:17-19).

    2. Also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil-this is God’s gift to man. Then I saw 👀 that all toil and all skill in work comes from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This is vanity and striving against the wind (Ecclesiastes 3 and 4).

It’s in my name and my blood. Generations of teachers I had no idea what I want till later on…I was hired even before I graduated…so my path was paved.
I also love real estate and driving.
so after I retired from my teaching career.. I will do the other two. Life is fun and good.

Thought I wanted to work in theater. Because of a really cold winter, an argument with my dad, and a couple other reasons, I joined the Navy. Was correctly pigeonholed into an administrative job which quickly turned into working for the Captain and subsequently I served as an Admiral's aide for 18 years. I'm now an Executive Assistant and wouldn't trade it for the world.

I worked at a college as an IT manager and was offered the opportunity to take over A class because the professor retired. I really liked teaching and taught that class for 14 years. Another college advertised for a Computer Science professor and I applied for the position and was hired. Too bad covid screwed it all up for me.

Curiously I recently had an epiphany about my IT degree.

I was having a look at my IT exams from university. The very first question was how to configure GRUB, the Linux boot-loader.

If I had to write down the "right" answer I won't probably know what to put there. Ironically my answer had been "you don't need to configure it, I figured out how to make the config file to configure itself"

      gitlab.com/.../default

Which just shows how those exams poorly translate into real life competence.

Kinda just stumbled into it... I love telling stories, I love taking pictures; I had the chance to become a filmmaker, so that's what I did.

I can't tell you that. But I will tell you what happened: I walked into the office and said "I'm interested in working here." And they said "You have to have a college degree."

Except if it is a medical professional, a lawyer or an engineer most likely that's not true.

Today I was having a look at my IT exams at university, degree which for instance I didn't finish.

The first question I stumbled upon I had no idea how to answer it by memory. It asked how to configure certain program.

Guess what, by chance, I have the response already coded in such a way that the configuration file configures itself.

Which means that not everyone is cut off for university, still it really says very little about with what your real competence could be if you worked at that.
