Why would people gossip about coworkers?

I heard from some coworkers that apparently I am in a relationship with a particular coworker. This is obviously not true as this coworker and I rarely speak to each other. Why do you coworkers gossip and share untrue information?

The reasons given are plausible... but being on the receiving end of the rumour hurts.

This never happened to me before... so I don't know what to do... I am afraid that if i correct this rumour, it will continue to be shared amd maybe add more things. I was thinking of actually not saying anything, and if someone asks me, I tell them that it is not true. I mean it is absurd to believe the rumour that 2 people who never even say hello to each other at work are together (even though there are people who are believing it)
