What does it mean if my job application status went from "review by hiring manager" to "in "progress" ?

Usually in Big Corporate that means it scanned and upon HR review fits job description Usually, that means into the second step you go. Each Business is different but usually there's a scan, HR review, and pass along to manager given background and references are both accurate and strong.

yes, thank you. one of my friends applied to a different position in the same company and he told me he got the interview schedule email the day the company flagged his status as "in progress" but mine is "in progress" since more than 2 weeks -_-

Hmm, sometimes that means second pile. If I was you, I would apply to other position within same company.
HR will recognize that is it more a company preference and possible allegiance than the "perfect position" Keeping an employee longer than 3-5 years until they hop to another joint for a better title is difficult these days. "She seems to have the intent of latching on and staying..." If that gets passed on to the Manager then it will lead to "we should least check her out"
