How far have you gone outside your comfort zone to accomplish something?

Beginning in 11th grade, I grew my hair long. I was a rock musician. I surfed, skateboarded, snow skied, played Frizbee and other sports, backpacked, drove all over the place, explored and went on endless adventures, went to concerts and festivals, partied like a Viking, always had a girlfriend, and had tons of fun. I went to community college part time and worked to earn money.

In 1980, when I was 26, a friend's mom got me an interview for a really good job.

The day before the interview, I got a regular haircut and bought a suit. At the interview, I realized that they had been told to hire me. So I got the job as a motor vehicle damage field adjuster/appraiser trainee. I knew nothing about the business.

It was the end of my carefree life.

I wore a suit and worked in offices in one of the Century Plaza Towers in Century City. Even when walking down the street, I felt like an imposter.

I didn't recognize myself in the mirror. After training for a year, they put me in the field. It was like being taught how to swim by being thrown in the deep end of a swimming pool.

The job was hard and I was stressed out, but it paid a great salary and amazing benefits, including a company car.

The thing is, I no longer looked like the people I used to hang out with. So I didn't feel comfortable in either my old or new life. I even broke up with my girlfriend.

I discovered that part of the job included being taken to lunch every day. For the first time in my life, I discovered really good food. The job was also sedentary. I started comforting myself with food and within five years, I gained 50 lbs.

I didn't have a girlfriend for about five years because I didn't like myself and didn't want the kind of girl who would want me.

When I was 34, I went on Weight Watchers, lost all the weight I had gained, and got back in shape. I also started dating again. By then, I had also become comfortable with my new persona. I had grown up.

I had gone WAY out of my comfort zone to get and keep that job. But in the end, it turned out great.

The only way to accomplish anything worthwhile is to be out of your comfort zone..
