I told him I loved his stories, and I want to join the navy. He said that women have no place in the navy. I asked him why. He said that women and seamen just don't mix well. It's a bad combination. I told him I love seamen, and all the women I know love seamen. We just can't get enough seamen in our lives. Why can't women join the navy and be around lots of seamen? What does it mean?

Dearest Muskrat. This one is a conundrum that is almost as old as the age of sail. By sheer coincidence, I too served in the Navy. Please extend my thanks and admiration to your friend for his service. Time spent in the Navy is rewarding. In fact, you'll recall that President Kennedy said so in August 1963 in his famous speech. Remember my friend Michael? His dad was a Naval Academy graduate and was there in Annapolis that sultry summer when President Kennedy delivered his speech in front of Bancroft Hall. In fact, that famous line from his speech is germane to our discussion. He said: "I can imagine a no more rewarding career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worth while, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the United States Navy.' "

You'll note that President Kennedy said "any MAN" [emphasis mine]. But, I think his speech was a reflection of 1963 more so than an endorsement of gender. And that's where, if you'll forgive me, I think your friend is wrong that women have no place in the Navy.

They do. And they're damn fine Sailors.

That reminds me of a story. My first ship was an aircraft carrier. There were not yet any women assigned to that ship. Midway through my tour onboard, one woman was assigned to the ship. She was an eye doctor. It was amazing: a week after she joined the crew, many Sailors began to have eye problems. Uncanny the coincidence.

Here's the thing. Women bring a different perspective to things. Including warfare. Women on ships and in the battlefield provide what former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen called "asymmetric advantage". We need that.

Which is far better than this site's asymmetric logic that the AI employs. Clippy from Microsoft Office of old could do a better job.
