What is your opinion of unintelligent people who get jobs due to their good looks?

I know somebody whose writing deserves a B- and she got the highest grade in the class because she was the prettiest girl in the class. She also got a job offer at the university which people with PhDs at top schools and hundreds of references have been rejected for, all due to her good looks. There is no way an average person can attain high 90s unless their professor likes them.

Yes, this happens all the time. Guys always hire the hot chick. I used to work for a big defence contractor. Everybody made good money in this place even the office help. There were some pretty hot women that worked there.

It is not fair but life is not fair.

Works for some types of jobs, but not many. Being attractive will get someone noticed, but if they aren't also competent, it won't last long

I've worked with people smarter than me as my subordinates and dumber than a bag of rocks as my boss/manager. Looks takes second place to skill.

The problem is at the top level in a company you need a completely different skillset than at the lower and middle levels.

Take manufacturing. A metalworker's skill is in working metal. He can bend it and temper it to form strength, beauty and function. So he's promoted to team leader and in addition to working the metal he now has apprentices working with him. But at his core he's still a worker. His team copies him so they become the best team in the works. He's promoted to shift supervisor. Now while he works he's not doing as much manufacturing, but he's doing enough to improve the factory by leading by example. The company boss hears about it and promotes him to foreman.

So far, so good. At his core he's still a metalworker.

The factory now produces the best ironwork in town and head office promotes him to an office away from the foundry to work with them. In a job he has no training or skill in.

He's not offered training in his new post, just told to get on with things.

He didn't lack intelligence, just experience in that field. He's a metalworker, not a marketing management executive.

So he hires Dylan Mulvaney to be the face of recruitment...

It's not his intelligence that's at fault, just his training.

As far as grades go, who cares? Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.

Write your own work to your own best standard.

Max Lucado is a wonderful writer. So was Matthew Henry. So was CS Lewis. But they wrote in totally different styles to communicate the same information.
