Yes, it happens. I would not mind if they were given for extraordinary effort by someone physically or mentally challenged, but a trophy just for showing up is ridiculous.
It is true for 2 out of the 3 districts I have worked for, including getting participation medals too.
Sadly its not a joke. Society is making a weak genration that will not survive

I think it's BOTH. It's an expression used to mock entitlement and sissiness, but it's also a physical trophy given to children so they won't have their feelings hurt
