Do children actually receive participation trophies in school?

Or was that just a joke, an idea that someone made up that took on a life of its own and went "viral"? I ask because when I was in school the very idea would have been laughed at, and I don't have any children, so... is it true?

Yes, it happens. I would not mind if they were given for extraordinary effort by someone physically or mentally challenged, but a trophy just for showing up is ridiculous.

It is true for 2 out of the 3 districts I have worked for, including getting participation medals too.

I think it's BOTH. It's an expression used to mock entitlement and sissiness, but it's also a physical trophy given to children so they won't have their feelings hurt
