Article 3 of the American library associations library bill of rights expressly States that books shall not be banned or removed from libraries Based on ideological or doctrinal requirements of the person trying to censor them. Did you mean specific titles, specific topics, specific ideological or theological doctrines? What degree of specificity were you hoping to get down to?

Too big a discussion for a site like this. Clearly libraries can't have all books - for purely practical reasons, so there must be some process for choosing. There are also some books that most people would believe do not belong in a public library - explicit pornography for example. ( I have no problem with porn, but don't want my tax dollars paying for it).

There are all sorts of tough questions about deeply offensive works - some of which have historical value, some which are just junk.

There is also the question of whether we are talking about libraries for adults, or for children.

The means of making that decision is called a collection development policy. It's usually ratified by the school board or the town government which sponsors the library.

What books are you referring to? The recent bans target any description of homosexuality or transsexuality. No one advocates for pedophilia.

The federal communications commission censors explicit depictions of violence or sex acts of minor children in television, movies, and other methods of content delivery. I do t see why that same standard is not applicable in tax-funded positions of public trust which minor children are compelled by force of government threats against their parents to attend. What I am referring to by conservative books are books typically but not always written by conservative authors which overtly or covertly advocate competing ideas to what is currently more likely to be found in school libraries. As an example of what I'm referring to for elementary students, the Rush Revere series written by Rush Limbaugh. Low information parents or agitators (unlikely to have read the book and thus unable to articulate specific arguments against it outside of received talking points or the identity of the author)

As a nation we don't have a definition of what belongs in schools, but the examples I gave I would argue as a holder of a masters in school librarianship that yes they do belong in a school library which upholds article 3 the American Library Associations library bill of rights.
