I recently started a bartending job and I love it so far! (The manager actually asked me if i wanted a job, i didn't apply.) Only problem is, when I first started, it was me and just one other girl on the schedule. There is a day shift and a night shift. I started training on night shift and I worked a few nights by myself, but then on a busy night I made a mistake. It got quickly resolved with just a short phone call to the manager and nobody was mad. I got a bit worked up, but it was my first weekend so it was super busy and I was stressed about making a mistake. The manager never once got upset (or at least never talked to me about it again since it was a minor mistake.) But shortly after that, I noticed that I was being scheduled all day shifts, which I don't mind, but I'm more comfortable with it now and a lot of the money comes from tips and day shift barely makes any. I haven't made any more mistakes after that so far and I've been there a few months now and I'm still getting day shift. They hired another new girl and so her and the other bartender get all the night shifts and I'm during the day. Is this just because they will attract more business at night because they're better looking or something? I'm more comfortable now and the mistake I made wasn't a very big deal. So restaurant/bar industry girl here. Those girls getting night shifts may have more experience than you do and can keep up with the fast pace of the night crowd. Your manager probably saw that mistake as you needing work with experience which less busy shifts will get you the hang onto the busier night crowds. Maybe talk to your manager and ask your manager what their overall opinion is of what you need to work on. Be prepared for constructive criticism.
i say speak up, tell the manager you prefer some nights.
