Is there a future for art students?

I want to study art since I am an artist but people say there are no many jobs for such fields. I am so confused now if I should follow my talent or just study anything.

I have an art friend, she does abstract art.

She's in roughly 60k of debt and works as a retail assistant. She has a postgraduate degree.

So you're kind of in between a rock and a hard place. Dead end jobs are soul destroying. But being a starving artist ain't fun either. I'm sure there's ways of being practical as an artist, if you can find your niche. Or find a job that is reasonably well attuned to who you are, and do art on the side. If you're creative enough you can make it happen. I suppose with uni 10k a year now it's hard to see the value in that though? I went in the opposite direction and studied something cause my dad said it was practical (stupid huh?). Suffice to say, it wasn't. And really suffered through that decision, too.

I would say that you are right. There are probably less opportunities in that field than most. If you are good at it though follow your dreams. Nothing to say you won't find something you really love doing. It is better than getting stuck in a job you don't like and makes you miserable. That doesn't sound like fun does it?

i wouldn't say to drop everything else to persue this dream but you shouldn't give up on it either, i think you should do it, im sure you got the potential for it so baby steps and i do believe something id say would be worth looking into for you would be mural painting which im sure can make money or maybe so digital designing, like pictures for websites and stuff maybe

Personally I would keep it as a hobby and find something else I like and with more potential. You could create and focus on trying to sell your art on weekends while this other thing becomes your main focus and is the main breadwinner.

There is definitely a future yes! But... that doesn't mean that it will pay well. But if you are passionate about art then you should find a way to make it work for you.
