I have about £20,000 saved. I’m currently living in a rental costing £1,000 a month.
how should I invest my money? I do want to own a home at some point. Should I buy one now to live in or could I buy one and rent it out and get the income?

That's not enough money to do more than something very conservative. Put it in a regular bank account, or maybe a CD.

If you want to buy a house, the stability of your job is more important than how much you have saved. If you are very confident that your job is stable, then buying a house for yourself might be OK if your down payment is very low. I would not use all that money for a down payment on a house. You need to keep some in the bank.

Owning a house is expensive, with highly unpredictable big expenses. Keep a big chunk in the bank.

It would be very wise to use that money to invest/trade (day trading, swing trading) in the markets. I do it with CFD (contract for difference) on Cryptocurrencies, stocks and commodities. You can double that money perhaps in a month, perhaps in a week if you do avid trading like I do.

You are in luck since you are in UK (i assume so since you mentioned British pounds), so you may trade CFDs.

But don't put the entire 20K into the account. Start with 500-1000 or whatever you are comfortable with and consider that amount "gone" until you made more than a handful of trades. Interest rates are pretty high now and, at least in the United States, real estate values are once again inflated and there will be another housing crash like about 15 years ago. I would try to save it in a conservative type investment that's low to no risk and in 5 years, think about investing in a home if the market improves.

I’m the meantime building credit is a good practice as credit scores affect loans. Can get a credit card with a low limit and start to pay it off monthly.
