Historically, here in the US, standardized test scores (SAT and ACT) are used, along with high school transcripts, to determine who is admitted to the college or university.

Colleges and Universities do not have standardized tests for their students. Instead, exams and passing criteria are determined within each course, with the college or university requiring a certain amount of core- and non-core course credits to obtain a degree.

There are professional examinations for various professions. For example, a person must pass a Professional Engineering (PE) Examination in order to obtain PE certification. Many technical designs (ex: bridges, buildings) require a PE to review and sign off on the design.
