Depends on how much you practice..
I practiced around 1 hour a day
Within maybe 2 weeks I was getting comfortable and hit almost 30 WPM...
Once you reach around 30, I think you will start getting comfortable rather than the initial brain stabbing feeling LOL

After 4 months I hit a personal record of 102 WPM
But I was not very serious about it, I think if you invest more time you will progress faster

My advice would be to initially focus on accuracy rather than speed
Meaning that focus to get the words right without mistakes even if it slows you down to not make mistake
Speed will come naturally , you don't have to force it

Practice, practice a lot
It's basically all about muscle memory , more you practice.. more your fingers will get used to it
And eventually you won't even have to think.. your fingers would automatically type the word in a flow... it's addictive to be frank! LoL

Take a 1 min test and keep typing and see your WPM go up magically!!!

Touch typing. I don't know how long it takes. It's a bit of muscle memory and remembering what key is which. I'm using Azerty, My index fingers are on the F key and the J key. On those two keys in particular there is a small little bump, unlike the other keys.

As for what finger goes to what key in general:

First keyboard here is Azerty, the other one is Qwerty. Look at which one you have and type that in google followed by "touch typing exercise" and I'm sure you'll find something online to learn it with :)

So far, about half a century, for me.
I DO type very fast but I only use one hand and HAVE to look at the keyboard as I'm typing. I jist tuped thiis wothout lpokinmg at tje keyboard or tyjer scteeem. Hmmm, not bad, really! 7 mistakes that I made! You have to consider that my keybord makkes a lot oof typos (double typing, and not typing at all when I hit the key, being the worst of the bunch). I'm typing this while llooking at the keyboard.
I do my typing and then, when I'm done, I proofread to correct all the mistakes. Most of them come from the keyboard! I can't TELL YOU how many times I try to capitalize a letter or word (without using caps lock) and it NEVER lets me cap those letters!! Sometimes, I have to pound the living shit out of the shift key to get it to work!!
