So I saw my former classmate (let’s call her Meg) from high school last year and she asked me what I was going to school for. I told her a teacher. Meg gave me a crazy look and said, “Why do you wanna be a teacher? Are you serious? Wanting to deal with bratty kids? Frankly you’re just wasting your time on something that is irrelevant. Teachers don’t get paid much and you won’t survive so what the hell is the point? You’re insane.”
Wow…that wasn’t what I expected. I said, “Are you serious? I thought you would support me on this since you’re my friend.”
Meg cut me off and said, “No I don’t support you at ALL. Just because I’m your friend doesn’t mean I’m going to agree with everything you do. I’m being honest.”
I said, “You don’t have it be rude. Being a teacher is a rewarding-“
She cut me off again and said, “You know what? If I hear that ONE MORE TIME! Get a real job. Something that will PAY you better. Like a doctor or whatever.”
I thought friends are supposed to support everything you do, well most things. I never spoke to Meg again after that and blocked her.
Although in many ways I agree with Meg , its not ( our ) choice , its your future , its what you want to do and achieve , and its your choice , so yes , of course she should be a supportive friend , I know a number of teachers who did it for life , its a noble role.

No it’s not wrong of her. Could she have been more tactful? Sure. People often pick friends who agree w everything they say, which is usually not a good thing because we’re told a bunch of lies by our “friends” because they don’t want to hurt our feelings. Especially w women. Maybe she just wants better for you as her friend but didn’t come out the right way about it. I know I wouldn’t be a teacher, but that’s my life not yours.

Why does that matter? Its your life, your career so your choice.
What a silly and opinionated broad. Both of my parents are teachers, always had a good salary, lifelong job security and are happy with their job choice.
