If you answer doesn't apply to me/never had it before in an interview question but later write to them the answer is it weird?

Yeah it is kind of weird. Regardless if something doesn't apply to you, they still expect you to answer the question when it is first asked.

I was asked to explain a situation when I had to deal with a difficult customer and what I did to calm the situation. I had never had to deal with a difficult customer at the time I was asked this question so I never knew how to answer it. So I instead used a family situation

It's not about the answer most of the time, it's about how you respond. They're already done with this, had 10 other interviews and are thinking about dinner; They don't care about the answer now.
