Why do deciduous trees change color in the fall?

Why is foliage generated? Why don't coniferous change colors? When do they shed needles?

To survive winter. Same reason trees drop their seeds in various ways such as fruit, helicopters, acorns, pine cones chestnuts etc

Leaves change colour because they are dying. Foliage is essentially fertiliser for the soil for new plants to grow. Circle of life, but it all comes from the sun.
