To survive winter. Same reason trees drop their seeds in various ways such as fruit, helicopters, acorns, pine cones chestnuts etc
Leaves change colour because they are dying. Foliage is essentially fertiliser for the soil for new plants to grow. Circle of life, but it all comes from the sun.
The reds and yellows are always there and once the chlorophyll goes they show through
Winner winner chicken dinner. And where does the chorophyll go in winter time?
Just breaks down and gets absorbed by the tree
