Would you turn down a Dream Job because of your anxiety?

My older cousin got offered a Dream Job for millions of people,

God… That’s even a dream job for me.

She is suffering from an anxiety though, much worse of an anxiety than I have, and she turned down that job offer because she thought this job would only bring her more anxiety.

I understand, support that decision and feel happy for her to prioritize her mental well-being, but had I been offered the same job, I’d never be able to turn it down.

What about you, what would you do in this situation?

Any anxiety I've had at precious jobs were usually because I hated my coworkers and their attitudes. It gets annoying listening to "that's not my job" to every little thing day in and day out.

I've turned down promotions before, but they weren't dream jobs. I'm not entirely sure what a dream job looks like as I can't possibly try everything and I'm constantly searching for the "best" job.

I regret turning down my last one because I believe it would have afforded me an opportunity to demonstrate my drive and ethic to another manager. But I was torn in wanting to continue helping out my existing manager.

I think a dream job begins with entering a field you believe has a future which you look forward to doing, not dreading. Perhaps a dream job isn't one that you find, it's one that you create. The most gratifying and proudest moments I've had were when I tried something new within policy to solve a problem that hadn't been considered.

Time flies when we have a dream job. Time slows to a crawl when we have a job we hate.

Our minds are tragically cruel to us. Put your hands on a hot stove, a minute can seem like an hour. Put your hands on a hot woman, an hour can seem like a minute.

I wouldn’t turn down a dream opportunity.


Pressure and stress is all part of growth when it comes to one’s career.


At the beginning of any challenging opportunity, it’s going to be tough, but if you push through, you will come out the other side so much more competent and confident.


I welcome high pressure because in every high pressure situation, there’s an opportunity to grow — its during these circumstances that I’ve always evolved the most.


But, in order to not spiral out of control, one needs to have their mental health in a good enough place to handle that pressure.


If their mind isn’t in a good place, it can lead to overwhelm and burnout.


I believe one is in a good place when they feel more excitement than they do fear — feeling excitement to take on an ambitious challenge overpowering their fear of failure.

Yyyyuuup. I was working for my dream job, and was so ready to be in those meetings to tell my ideas and it was gonna be hard nights of-

A team doing my dream job spent 6 years on a project and sold it. It was... absolute trash. Knowing I put my heart and soul into a thing and I'm being pushed to do better... pretty sure it would take a bite of my mental stability.

I was sure I can't do something. I was rejecting offers for years. Someone told this witch to do it. And I tried... scared AF... but it worked... I realized I have skills and knowledge and only thing which stopped me was my own fear...

So now, lesson learned. I would at least try.

My dream job wouldn’t have me drowning in anxiety anyways.

I will always prioritize my mental and physical health. I can do that now 👌

Honestly , I would not turn it down , I'd just seriously go for it and see what happened , why even go for it in the first place? I've had a number of roles I couldn't really do , but over time I made it though , its a dream job , you have to have a crack , outside your comfort zone.

And I'm imagining in a big role , it took quite a bit of getting? Even internal appointments like this must follow process , big process these days. I remember when I got State Sales Manager of Bic ( I had no idea they'd pick me ) and call it anxiety ( or whatever ) , I had plenty of it , I didn't know what it was like to do major accounts presentations , I didn't even know how to work out the percentage increase / decrease , but guess what I learnt ! All , I did for strategy was this ( no one to teach me ) What did Allan do well? ( The guy before me ) , just copy that and expand a little. What did Allan do poorly? Just change all that on its head..
And in the end I was a champion at co operative budgets and public speaking - You need multiple degrees to get that role today. So Sad she didn't go for it , it was her serendipity , her opportunity.

I don't think I would let a job consume in the process...

if it is going to damage me severely... then it's not the dream, lol...

also, if I had the chance one, could probably get it a second time... once I were much better and ready for it too

Yes I would, because anxiety is pretty much the worst feeling I've ever had in my life. Anxiety attacks are horrible. I don't know if you've ever had anxiety, but it's almost impossible to describe, and it clouds your mind with this impending doom that's just horrible.

In this situation, I'm not sure what you mean by a dream job for millions of people. Do you mean I would be offered a "dream job", in order to satisfy millions of people? If so, then I would turn it down anyway just because that doesn't sound like a dream job to me.

Or, do you mean she turned down a dream job that includes working for people for millions of dollars? While that would be tempting, anxiety negates the joy millions of dollars brings.

My mental health takes priority over a job. Having your dream job is pointless if you end up taking your own life due to severe mental struggles. It would really suck to turn down a dream job, but your well-being is more important.

that's what worries me about you. in some cases people think they are right in their minds when they are not. that doesn't hinder them from being successful like other celebs e. g. britney spears, amanda bynes, or the recently departed aaron carter.

If I could not manage my own anxiety, I wouldget treatment for it. I would nottake a job thta I believed would make it worse. Quality of life is everything.

I don't really have anxiety. I have sometimes over driven my headlights. . You have to getout of your comfort zone sometimes. It is healthy to challenge yourself. I have known failure too but still would do it again

I never pass up an opportunity so I would have taken the job. Mental health is important and if it would affect that then health has to come first.

Well, from my experience/standpoint, I don't care about prestige, especially since I can't really talk about my work and never told anyone who I really worked for, so that's not a plus. Rewarding to me would be designing custom 3d printed prosthetics for injured critters or correcting birth defects. Pretty much anything else isn't rewarding, it's a paycheck, or it's the stuff I used to do that WAS rewarding, but there are the downsides that come with that.

In my country a lot of people want to be doctors and lawyers "because they are prestigious"... yet all the doctors and lawyers I've dated have shite schedules and far too little work-life balance for my tastes. I wouldn't do what they do if you added a zero at the end of the paycheck. Qualities/traits like that just aren't universal, and unless your sister is regretting her decision, then they weren't universal for her either. Now if she IS regretting her decision because of her anxiety, then yeah I hope she can get it treated before it costs her other opportunities, sure, but it may have just not been something that did anything for her. I know a lady that's really big on Toys for Tots so poor kids can have Christmas and what not. Finds it really rewarding. Means nothing to me.

Seems like that job would have been right up your alley. I bet you would have gone for it. Unless it's Olympic zig zag racing. You should start in the minor league and work your way up there. Don't want to blow up too fast. The whole "the brightest shooting stars burn out the fastest" sort of thing and whatnot ;)

Yep. Had it been me, I’d go for it.

I take things that scare me as a challenge and I end up going for them.

I had a fear of public speaking ever since childhood but I was also very often invited on different city and countrywide competitions and had to do the public speaking regardless.

My hands were shaking everytime.

But I didn’t stop until after I earned myself some great countrywide titles at public speaking and debates.

The more I was afraid beforehand, the more rewarding my wins felt after I was done.

I take fear as a challenge. I used to think - If I am not afraid of doing it, it is not great enough for me to do.

So when I was afraid, I used to feel “Bring it on…”

So, I might have an anxiety too, but I would go for it regardless. I wouldn’t be able to turn down the thrill of it and accept that, I can’t do something because I am scared.

One thing I have learned is that "dream jobs" are still jobs and end up being just work. I have obtained my "dream job" more than once only to realize it ain't all that.
