G. K. Chesterton's "The Napoleon of Notting Hill". It's the other (and first, in writing order) famous novel that takes place in 1984 (eighty years after it was written), and is probably the greatest thing to a single masterpiece that he wrote.
It opens with "The human race, to which so many of my readers belong...", and according to legend, the publishing agent stopping reading right there and rushed out to buy the rights, figuring that anyone who'd use a line like that as an OPENER had to be a good author.
It's not long (less than 250 pages), and it's in the public domain (so you can read it for free online: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/20058/20058-h/20058-h.htm ).
