Is management still a good major?

Do you think management is still a good major? My cousin wants that but I feel like he might have a hard time after he graduate.

It's natural to worry about job prospects after graduation, especially with how fast the world is changing. But here’s the thing: management as a major still holds a lot of value. It gives you and understanding of how businesses operate, so until there is no business on earth, it will be in demand. Your cousin will learn about leadership, strategy, organizational behavior, and even a bit about finance and marketing.

Now, it's true that the job market can be competitive, and having a degree in management doesn't automatically place someone at the top of the pile. What can really make a difference, though, is how your cousin uses the degree. Internships, networking, leadership roles in student organizations, and relevant part-time jobs can all beef up a resume and provide real-world experience that employers love.

It’s definitely still a good choice, as long as he's puts in the work to stand out.

I don't know if I have ever met someone with a management degree. Degrees in business, accounting, administration and marketing, yes, but not management.

A management degree seems pretty generic. There are exceptions, but generally the best managers are the ones who worked their way up and know the jobs in the field they are managing. Getting a degree in management, without knowing what they are actually managing doesn't seem like a good route to go.

That doesn't mean companies won't hire someone with a management degree. Quite frankly, a lot of companies don't actually know what they want or need. That's because the people doing the hiring didn't work up through the ranks either. So they don't really know what the job entails.

What he needs to do is research it. He needs to research it locally, or anywhere that he might realistically want to move to. Local markets can vary a lot. So what is good in one place might not be good in another.

This is true of ALL degrees and trades. Putting in the time and money to get a degree without knowing what the market is like can end up being a waste of time and money.

He also needs to find out what the job actually entails, which is often not what official job descriptions say. The actual job done by managers can vary a lot. Some may be more hands on. Some may be nothing but going to meetings and budgeting. Some may be doing exactly the same work as the people they are managing.

So bottom line is that he needs to put in some real time and research. There are far too many people choosing careers at a young age without knowing what they are getting into. This is one of the reasons why there is such a high dropout rate in college. People go to college just because they think they are supposed to.

In my opinion, the fact that management is a major is a joke (most degrees are, but that's beside the point). If someone wants to be a manager, they have to put in the work and demonstrate the skills necessary for a role like that. If employers want to put candidates through management formation and selection courses and programs, fine. But it should NOT be a college major.

That to me sounds like that girl on TikTok recently griping about how she got her finance and marketing degree or something or other and was now "stuck" working at Starbucks. The worst part was when she said - in a SUPER cringey manner, no less - that her "degree was the experience". No, it's not. It's a piece of paper that just says you showed up to class, you did the homework, and you passed the tests.

If he knows what he wants to do and he is sure he will find a job... then why not?

the best managers I worked with were people with a deep understanding of group processes and expertise in the area in which the business was operating. The managerial skills... every company has its own report system, evaluation process, and ways of motivating and promoting people. Most managers I knew were learning from their mistakes... so, no idea if he could really learn anything useful in college

I would rather study the area he wants to work in... so he will already have a deep understanding of the business the company that hires him does.

Sure, if you want to be hated. Managers have to do what their bosses want, and that may be screwing people over and being unfair. No one likes those types of managers, as you can see by all the complaints seen online. It's practically a must these days to get ahead in management. If you don't mind being the bad guy, then go for it.

I have seen job offers within the last week that claim to prefer but don't require a business management degree.

That said, having worked in business management for years, it's pretty useless in my opinion, and someone who has simply been working for those four years (and likely less) is better qualified. I have also never actually met someone working in management who has a management degree.

The only business major that clearly opens doors for you is Accounting, and arguably marketing though backlash to the "wokeness" crap is largely directed at recent (within the last decade) marketing graduates, who are being seen as a liability.

The entire purpose of being a manager is that you get things going until you are no longer needed then you are there for emergencies only you can get to a manager without wasting 60k+ on college

Management is taken care of by robots, computers and AI now. Minimum wage employees are used to manage everything else.
