How much effort do you put into training someone?

So, owners, managers, supervisors, foremen, etc - how much work do you put into training someone?
Specifically- someone that isn’t putting much effort into learning?

I’ve been a captain for a couple companies for a few years now which means training deckhands and new captains pretty regularly, and sometimes I question my ability as a leader/ trainer. I just simply have zero interest in forcing someone to learn. Come in with a good attitude, effort, and ask me questions? I’ll show you everything I know
But if I have to force it down your throat? Forget about it, you’re on your own

I've hired and trained people, but I insist that I be able to cut the ones who either put no effort into it or just don't have the skills/ability to do the job. Most of the time, I can figure that out the first day. I see no point in wasting anyone's time or money.

That said, I made sure my company went WAY further than the other companies when it came to training our techs, and as a result, our techs did a better job, got jobs done faster, and could solve problems on their own a lot more often than the other companies could. And when I left that industry, and some of my techs went to work for other companies, I actually got feedback from a couple of them who were amazed at how much my techs knew (more than other other company owners in some cases), and they let me know that the techs they'd hired from me were the best techs they had.

That wasn't an accident. Instead of letting them ride with someone else for two days and then throwing them to the wolves to fail, I let them ride with someone else for two days and THEN, only AFTER they'd seen the job actually be done in the real world, would I bring them in for classroom training. I had PowerPoint slideshows that I used in the classroom which also became their "Tech Book" that they carried in their trucks as a reference, and there was a lot of hands-on in the training as well, to keep them awake and involved.

I did cut a few trainees, but the majority made it to the field and did well.

I don't hire to train, no... I do hire by recommendation and experience, and this is reference

there is yes, of course, the cases in which there's little experience, and those do require some sort of training, but more than training... to make it very clear about what the job implies... and on this, there's teamwork, which is going to cover most of it in the way we want it, and we want them to work with is, so...

a big part of that is "screening" process, when hiring someone... it is key to hire someone that seems like they're the ones who have learned well and performed well in previous jobs, and not for us to hire someone that knows little or none and then would require full training and supervision

Yeah I totally agree, you can definitely tailor your hiring to people that will excel and not need babysitting.
Unfortunately hiring is out of my hands, I just have to deal with what I’m given. Though I do have a lot of say in whether or not they stay.

funny thing for me is...

as a tutor in studies, and a coach in sports... I would never EVER give up on any, and I would do all I can to inspire or motivate a young one, and I've always had that approach

but at work, at a professional level, and an adult... I'll just skip and not bother with those that do not have initiative, lol... which is pretty much a valid option, since you're trying to keep or to hire the best and most fit for the task

See I was never good enough at sports to be there and only did trade school, but as for professionally that’s exactly where I’m at.
My industry is pretty niche and it’s not really one you can be wishy washy about, either you’ve got it and want it or you’re not gonna make it. Glad I’m not just a bad leader lol

well, the more specific the job and the tasks are... then the more selective you have to be about it, that's just how it is...

A lot. It takes up every living, breathing second of your day. You're their leader and role model as well as their trainer. You're supposed to set the golden standard for them. You've got to take impressional folsk with whatever problems and questions and have and bring them up to the line of morals, standards, skill, and faith it takes to be successful at the stuff they have to do in work and in life. (Military especially is not just a job... it's a life... you are the one who has to impart that to them.)

I've been training folks for 30+ years and I can tell you... there's no down time. And if you're good? They're loyal to you for life. I have a few "lifers" now. Good kids and I'm always proud to see what they've been able to accomplish once they've completed their training with me.

Half effort isn't what I would be looking for to hire. I'd be telling management to find someone who came to work, pull their share.

I ran an IT department and I put a lot of effort into training. I also made sure to hire people that did not mind learning new things. I used to run team building exercises and I would pair up the younger guys with the older ones to try and get them to learn from each other.

Oh I was about to misread this question lol 😆😅 - hmm. I for one though could always put many years into training a dog or training a girlfriend to be my ideal woman consensually aka "rewards good behaviour, gives cold shoulder for off putting habits* lol 😂😆

When i had student-teachers i GAVE MY SOUL, BODY AND MIND to them. I have to. Its a job that only trial by fire will work. Only a few were naturals, many needed YEARS to understand the kids, the institution and the curriculum. Teaching is NOT for the faint of heart!

I quite like mentoring and teaching people how to think. In more task oriented stuff I'll demonstrate as much as is needed.

If I have to force it down somebodies throat, I am giving up.

Agreed. I have a very dangerous job and often train new people. If the new people can't sense the danger and aren't willing to learn, they don't belong there.
