Are you in a job/career that is about to be made obsolete by AI & the next wave of Automation?

Through the mid 90s & early 2000s a whole range of office jobs disappeared due to automation & computers. Everything from sectaries to typists to photocopier operator, to mailroom worker disappeared. In factories to more and more became automated.

The next wave of Automation along with AI looks set to make a huge number of jobs redundant except this time it looks to be those jobs that require a college degree at a high level such as accounts, lawyers, teachers, doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, sales person, finance, computer programmer, computer support, graphic design, market research, HR and of course managerial roles.

I think a lot of White Collar mostly liberals thought that the only people that would find themselves out of a job would be blue collar workers that say work in a coal mine or in factories or in the service industry.

FYI For the record over the last few years Liberals have been saying that coal mining is dead and all those that work in the industry need to reskill, retrain and go to college and it's a competitive economy. Which all together arrogant and ignorant because coal mining is like other mining industries has over the last few decades become largely automated with all the work done by heavy machinery, gone are the days of hundreds of men with pick axes going into a pit to dig coal. To work in mining you actually have to be well trained and educated. As well as to mention how important mining actually is to the us economy& industry, ie all the lithium for those electric cars that catch fire or the components for your devices or the steel etc.

Not exactly, but part of my job is automating as much as possible and the automation tools are heavily reliant on AI/machine learning. There will always be a human element, but the most tedious of tasks are going to slowly move over to being automated. It's about efficiency, and tbh, no one wants to do the tasks that are being automated. If we can reduce staffing needs by 25-50% over the next decade (easy task, in my opinion) then it still won't matter, because we'll grow by 2x in that time, minimum, and won't be needing to reduce overall staffing. Just relative staffing.

There won't always be a human element. It will lessen as ai and automation advance until the human element is gone. Much like John Henry and his hammer.

For some jobs, yeah. But we'll just find other work that needs to be done. And maybe we can eventually just have to shorten the standard work week, so the existing jobs can be spread out more.

The other work that needs to be done will be done by automation an AI. The government would have to make jobs that don't really need to be done.

The government already makes jobs that don't need to be done lol. But I get your point that automation will keep growing. But economies will keep adapting. Maybe one day we'll get to the point that tech has made all work obsolete, but then we'll all just be living in a utopia/dystopia where life is about hedonism and the only "work" will be whatever we make up for fun.

I'll be long dead before we get to that level of development. But if it happened tomorrow, I'd just start homesteading and would raise my own animals and grow my own food and medicine.

Depends if we live under totalitarianism, or just "almost totalitarianism" like today. My family home has a strong well, so no shortage of water. And almost ten acres to work with.

But will you own that ground water. Remember in some states they won't let you collect rainwater from your gutters. A neighbour of mine talks about having to basically flee california after a corporation drilled across into their small towns ground water which the town depended on and stole it all legally. Small farmers are currently and methodically being forced to sell up by banks and corporations.

Sure the lawyers can ask a. i. for data but only a lawyer calculates and interpreted.

In fact if i hired a robot a. i. to defend me and it hears the evidence i imagine both lawbots would agree... which would pissoff the judge n jury!

About white collar... they put that into a south park episode. people came from the future and took jobs, but some did not feel affected until they took the white collar jobs. Lol.

Yeah but AI can interpret the facts of the case leaving out all that pleading, negotiating, judge and jury. Probably work out fairer too. No millionaire's son getting off rape because he's on the honor role and has a bright future. No you did the crime and the sentence for such a crime is 10 years.

I'm not too concerned, I'm currently certified to fly pretty much every fixed wing aircraft currently in use, and I'm very close to getting my rotary (helicopter) certification. There are endless opportunities in the Aviation industry.

Rotary aircraft look to be a thing of the past. Some of these new future platforms being pioneered by the us military look interesting though. Bell V-280 Valor is very interesting and v22 osprey, 3 times the range and much faster than a helicopter.

I'm in digital marketing and web design and while I can say AI is definitely making things much easier and intuitive and I can see that it won't be long before it takes over... I'll also say it's not quite there yet. And learning all the tools necessary for good web design and digital marketing definitely takes time. My guess is my job may be obsolete in 10+ years. I'll figure something else out before then lol

You're right about the YUPPIES thinking their safe - it's laughable! The future is coming for white collar jobs too! I think my former profession of teacher is safe. Yes there will be institutional and procedural changes but it requires a human connection.

Teaching can be condensed down to lectures on Skype and AI. College probably could be to.

White collar jobs are first. There is no danger in AI replacing their jobs nor is there really any need for a person to do those jobs.

@Sharkstealth there's no need to replace any jobs with AI or automation except reducing the cost of labor. Imagine education boards could reduce their payroll tomorrow by 50%, do you think they wouldn't?

Well I use for example finance. Why would finance need a physical person doing it? You just enter information and sign contracts. Something to compare would be construction. You can't have AI or automation moving around and constructing anything in a building site plus the danger of doing so would be multiplied in an inspection circumstance.

Dr. Pepper, as a former teacher myself, I agree with you that it's a bad idea, but we're doing that to a large extent anyway by having kids test online with secure browsers and doing virtually everything through learning management systems. We also have kids doing credit recovery by having them watch videos and take quizzes and tests in fixed curriculums, so it wouldn't be hard to do away with in-person teaching altogether (granted with poor results) if the plutocrats decide they don't want to fund in-person teachers.

Exceptions would be career and technical education that uses machinery and/or tools. Even science labs can be done via software (again, not recommended).

@Avicenna you could see class sizes doubled or tripled with the use of AI assistants. I'm not saying it's a good idea but parents just can't rely on schools anymore to teach the basics to kids which is why homeschooling is becoming very popular. Schools right now are just a cheaper form of daycare.

I said it was a cheap daycare not actual daycare. I believe it costs the taxpayer about $15,000 per high school student per year. The idea being that parents can dump their kids in school so both parents can go out to work and contribute to the tax base.
Home schooling is growing with many liberals because a lot of high-schools are failing students. A lot of people try to lie to get their kid into a good public school.
