It depends on the state and school district. It can vary a fair amount. There are no national rules on that.

I think it's most common for kids to start at 14 and graduate at 18. Depending on their birthday it might be 13 and 17.

Most kids turn the required age before the school year starts. But some turn that age after the start of school. It may be as much as 4-5 months after school starts. This can be a BIG problem for kids who move from one state to another. I have known kids who had to repeat a year because of it.

Some states and schools only have three years of high school. Kids still go the same total number of years, but it can be divided differently between elementary, middle and high school. Middle school is sometimes called junior high school.
