Should I go to hair dresser school?

Question

So I’ve been debating if I should go to school to become a hairdresser this coming August. I’m already in university but I’m super tired of the curriculum and want to try something new. Hair dressing school is 13 months 8-3:30
Every day of the week and summer break is only 2 weeks. If I do the hair school I would also be doing 1-2 uni classes online along side doing hair school. I know it’s gonna be a lot of work and I’m not sure if I’m making a mistake by going or not going. My 2 major issues in my decision is that if I go I will literally not have a summer at all. (Usually in university our summers are like 4 months) it will take me a year and a bit meaning that I’d be taking only 1-2 classes a semester in university for a year and a half. What do u guys think? I just don’t want to do something I’ll regret.

My wife went to cosmetology school after high school and it worked out great.
She immediately got a job when she graduated and moved out on her own.

Over the years, she constantly kept up with the newest techniques, went to seminars, etc.

Being self employed allowed her to move from Cincinnati to California.

She worked at a high end salon on Rodeo Drive in Hollywood for quite a while and even assisted with hair and makeup on celebrity photo shoots.

At one point, she was the west coast regional rep for the Paul Mitchell Company.

She also became a professional photographer, doing weddings, portraits and other things. She's a go getter.

When I met her, she was working under the table doing people's hair at their homes in the Los Angeles area and had a large client list. It was illegal but very laid back and cushy.

We moved to a rural area in California after we got married almost 29 years ago. She found a spot right away at a salon in the nearby historic town. You basically rent a chair and the salon owners want someone who brings in clients and sells products.

Then she moved to a different salon where she rents her own small, private room that she can also use as a photo studio. She has it decorated really cute. We became good friends with the owner.

At almost 69 year old now, she still works there because she enjoys it. Since she is self-employed, she now works part time and makes her own schedule.

The thing about being a cosmetologist is, you make friends and establish relationships with clients. And you get to do some fun things like make ladies glamorous for special events. My wife even does girls' hair and makeup for their proms and high school graduations. And she sometimes gets hired to take portraits or group photos.

When I go get a haircut I am told how hard it is for them to find people to cut hair. However it might be due to the fact it does not pay very well. Also I do not know what you are majoring in or how long you have been going to uni. You need to research this and if you only want to do it because you think it will be easier I would think twice. You will hopefully live a long time and you only are young once. .

What is your goal for university? How many more years before you graduate? how/who is paying for university/ salon school?  There is nothing wrong with going to any… but what is your goal?

Your decision depends on your passion and long-term goals. If hairdressing excites you and you envision a career in it, then pursuing that path could be rewarding. Balancing both could be challenging, but it's manageable with strong time management. Remember, the intensity might be difficult without the usual summer break from university. Reflect on your enthusiasm for each path and the future you desire before deciding. Choose what resonates best with your passions and where you see yourself thriving. Making a choice true to your heart usually reduces the chance of regret.
