What is the worst profession to be in if you're antisocial?

I'll start. Customer Service.

I ironically work in customer service but I'm in the part that doesn't interact with customers or even that many coworkers as most work from home lol so it's really antisocial friendly but for those jobs in customer service where they have to speak with customers and their antisocial, that has to be a bitch!

@Simslover92 Working for the state for several years, directly with the public, face-to-face, I understand what you mean, and do acknowledge that it can be very stressful and depressing at times - even if you are not antisocial.

I know, many persons working with the public that probably should not be, for that reason.

It used to be really bad but I sort of was forced to get out of being that way in college. I am still a bit antisocial but not as much as I was when I was younger. It's easy to be social on here though because I don't have to actually make human interaction with people on here.

I will be the contrarian here and say that customer service is probably fine. Not good, but fine. After all you are not truly social, you follow a script with a predetermined goal. Its theater, not being social.

The worst in my head would require social interaction that is not strictly professional. Obviously things like event managers, where the real job is largely to use your rich social life, would be a strong contender. For more entry level work, I think personal assistants to anyone in need is among the worst fits.

Today I was on the phone and I spoke to Customer Service and I subsequently had to make a complaint.


She was condescending rude and unprofessional.


I am not aiming this response at all customer service this is just aimed at my specific interaction with customer service this morning.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. I don't fortunately have to talk to customers but if I did, I would be sure to be courteous and pleasant with my customers.

Ironically, later on in the day when I made the complaint, the customer service personnel that took the complaint was very kind and courteous as you have pointed out.

She went through the necessary protocol of security before engaging with me in conversation, unlike her previous colleague.

Well glad it turned around. Customer service is not an easy job to work in but if you want a smooth customer service work experience then being kind and courteous is the best way to do it. I don't understand why they hire people who don't understand that or who will not follow protocol.

This is a very good point regarding being kind and courteous, and also following protocol.
But I do think that there is something else that we, as people on the receiving end of Customer Service, or more to the point, bad customer service, there is a high probability that they didn’t receive the correct training from the word go!
So ultimately, this could be down to the poor training of the organisation itself.
Even worse, it could be a problem amalgamated by both sides, poor training and bad Customer Service.

Right. It does indeed start with the organization and how they train their customer service folks. And of course, just hiring someone who has no experience whatsoever in the field.

The first point of call is to follow company protocol regarding security with customers prior to engaging in conversation with them.
If customers are not who they claim to be, then customer service could divulge information that is confidential.
2, once all these measures have been completed properly then Customer Service have to buy all means that they must be as kind and courteous and understanding as possible.
Should there be a complaint, they have to remember that at any time their Job could be on the line if they’ve overstepped the mark.

I don’t know the very worst in the world, but the worst I have been in is restaurant server, you really have no choice but to chat with people and be friendly, well I guess you do have the choice to not get tips or possibly get fired but if you want to keep the job and get good tips you really have to smile and be friendly. I am not antisocial at all but, I did have some days when I wanted to be alone but I still had to act social even when I did not feel it.

If you have trouble with something I've always felt it important to face that challenge rather than flee from it. Small steps until you triumph. Then it would be like AA and falling off a wagon, but get back up again and face it. Never been one to take things holding me back.

I'm not sure if it's the worst overall, as it depends on your focus as a journalist; it could be journalism. You generally can't do journalism without contacts and networking. There are exceptions, though, and that could be brought up as a counterargument.

If I was antisocial I would imagine anything to do with the general public would be hell. My boss is antisocial and we are very much in a people oriented business and that guy sets a shitty environment so I do not suggest anything public related. Work from home…
