Damned if you do, damned if you don’t: What situation gave you that mindset?

I’ve just been “fired” from a volunteer job that I’ve had for the past 6 months. I did everything right, went above and beyond considering it was an unpaid role every single week, but it didn’t matter. The manager constantly nick picked at everything I did or didn’t do, she’d find a fault in what I did no matter how tiny, until today she told me to leave! Truly felt like a damned if I do, damned if I don’t situation. Thankfully I wasn’t the only one, 2 other people were fired, though they were paid employees.
