What is the most common teaching method in your school system?

Most of us have a bunch of subjects at school that are compulsory. Teachers expect you to get sufficient grades in all of them, so everyone ends up 'knowing' more or less the same. The idea behind it is that every student has a basic grasp of every subject and can then make the correct career choice.

But I think we should really focus on what a particular person is good at, rather than trying to reinforce teaching the subjects we are worst at. Let's say you're good at math but terrible at chemistry. Shouldn't teachers value what you're good at, stimulate math and prepare you for excellence in this particular subject?

Here i believe English class is the only one compulsory all the way through. Math's and social studies are compulsory up until and through year 11 (11th grade) same with PE. Ages 5-10/11 swimming lessons are also compulsory.

At my high school in the first year your classes would be English, maths, social studies, science, and PE and then your last slot would be alternated each week and changed each term for classes such as art, cooking, computing, woodworking, sewing, language class etc so you got to try everything the school had to offer to see what you enjoy most.

At my school

Social studies after year 11 splits into different categories history, economics, and classical studies.

English splits into academic and regular.

Maths splits into calc and algebra

Science into biology and chemistry

Assessments are based on credits, you have internal exams (tests /assignments done in class throughout the year) and external exams (your standard sit down in rows in a big room). There is 3 levels which you start from year 11. You have to reach 60 credits plus 10 literacy and 10 numeracy from level 1. The literacy and numeracy credits from level 1 can roll over into level 2 and 3 so you dont have to get them in those years.

Thanks for the explanation. Wow, we never had the opportunity to take art, cooking, computing, woodworking or sewing. Language classes yes, up to 2 foreign languages.

I think that, apart from the subject itself, having a teacher who is able to motivate his class makes all the difference.

I do believe that there is a basic level of knowledge that all students should have regarding specific subjects like maths, English/(your native language), social study, general science, physical education and health studies. Once you have achieved that basic level of knowledge, then you can branch off into whatever specific subjects you want, which is how the education system works in my country.


You are required to take all of those subjects until your final year of school, and in your final year you can take whatever classes you’d like, none are compulsory. In my final year I dropped maths, social study and health studies, and I picked up engineering, automotive and biology instead.
