Did university actually make you smarter, or just better at self-learning?

I am surprised at how many skills I learned because nearly everything I learned was something I taught myself while looking for new ways to fulfill my gpa requirements.

Our professor told us on the first day of class, he is there to teach us self-directed independent thinking we teach ourselves through his class, he is not there to provide us with a manual for teacher directed thinking that we learn through memorization or imitation.
