A GED is a diploma, but if you mean graduate from high school vs. a GED, at 27 you wouldn't be allowed to go to high school, you would have to get a GED. The diploma is the same and has the same value.

The only value it does have is if a specific job requires a minimum of a high school diploma, such as a car dealership.

To have real value in the working world you would need at least a college degree unless you can show the employer you bring something unique that no degree would matter, such as something entrepreneurial. Even then, some professions such as teaching require degrees, and then later require master's degrees.

If you are academically advanced or highly motivated, you can study for and pass the GED in a matter of weeks or months. Of course you don't need either. I started working full-time at 16 while taking a business course at night. There are other options that will lead you to a $100,000+ yearly income if you are motivated enough.

  • I’ve coached many people through this choice. The real GED benefits, if you’ve already left high school, are:

    - Time efficiency: You can finish in months instead of years.
    - Cost: Usually cheaper than returning to school.
    - Access: Opens doors to community colleges, many universities, trade schools.
    - Employment: Qualifies you for most jobs that require a high school credential.
    - Military: Accepted, though some branches may prefer diplomas.
    - Confidence: Proving to yourself you can complete it often becomes a springboard to further education or training.

It’s the same. GED carries the same equivalent power to a high school diploma, the only real difference is people know you got one before the other
