Currently I’m in the process of evaluating options for my major. I am in Health Sciences right now and still have 56 credits until I get a bachelors degree 😣 however, I was also told that if I pursued a Bachelors in General Studies, I would have only 18 credits to do and could graduate within two semesters.
Now this is my question: IS THIS WORTH ANYTHING? I want to pursue a career somewhere in the medical field and I am taking courses that are all biology, medicine, and health related, however I don’t know how employers will view that degree if I go to apply for something. Does anyone here have a personal experience with BGS? Is it worth it? Does it really not matter so long as you have good experience in the field when you go to apply? Pleaaase help! I cannot afford to make the wrong decision at this point in my life.

Wow I’m getting a lot of negative ideas on the General Studies degree. I wasn’t really on board with the idea either, but thought I tried asking anyways. Ugh 😩 I just want to graduate so bad already. Been in college since 2015 😣
What are the pros and cons to a Bachelors degree in General Studies?
You will spend 4 years time of your life to study and prepare course projects so you won't be expelled. You will spend 4 years saving up and paying for the tuition fee so you won't be expelled. You will spend 4 years of your energy to do these studies because nobody else will do it for you, so you won't be expelled. You will have almost no time for fun, leisure etc... unless you are OK with impacting your academic performance (and risking being expelled) and you like sleepless nights.
Pros:
In the end after you have defended and obtained your bachelors degree signed paper (all at the huge expenses of your life, time, money and energy and sometimes even your health because depression is the modern epidemy) the employers will go through an orgasm just seeing it. It's the most important factor for the employers in having you getting a job. I know, it sound stupid but stupid works while smart does not.
That academic degree is literally your license to be allowed to work in a position, that pays higher than minimum wage. It's like your work permit number 2.
Now days there really aren't any pros. You have absolutely no focus in your studies, which means that you're basically doing highschool 2.0. No one is going to hire you based upon the merits of a Liberal Arts Degree, simply because a Liberal Arts degree means you studied a little bit of everything, but didn't train to do anything.
Cons: you just threw yourself into a shitload of debt (unless you're smart about your costs), pursuing a degree that will only be useful for getting into grad school.
I'm pretty sure you can definitely get jobs with that degree as you can pretty much getting jobs with any degree program. What matters is not so much of the degree program you choose, but the type of positions you want to go for and you take classes tailored Doodles job positions. Are plenty of people who have degrees in areas that they normally wasn't specialized for but we're able to get better-paying jobs. The point is is that you can easily get an engineering degree, and still will not be an engineer. You can be a business major, and still work in Wal-Mart. Most positions that require a specific skills that would be better explode in a vocational or trade school then at college. The only way to truly know where you stand is to speak to those who are already in the career path that you want. I was thinking about taking General Studies as well. However, don't fall for the Trap I'm going for easy credits because it can easily give potential employers a bias view of you. At the end of the day no matter what degree you have, is all about how you choose to Market yourself.
Mine is in marketing and I don't use it at all. Though I did have one job that required it. Overall my thought is that a bachelor degree itself is overrated. You're better off not getting a degree if you don't have a plan for how to use it.
You really need to be talking to medical or nursing schools - in other words, to the places that you'd likely go next. And if you're looking more to medical administration (medical insurance or something), then you'd need to talk to some recruiters - the people who help place people in those jobs. The reason being that this is a more specific question, and the only people who will have the answers are those who are in those fields.
It will help if you know what you want to do. If you are trying to be a doctor, then what matters is what medical schools think. If you're going to be a nurse, then it's what nursing schools think. If you're going to be a pharmacist, then you need to know what those programs are looking for. What might be okay for an office-worker may be very different than someone who is working directly with patients.
Cons: Every other degree will be considered over yours. You would be far better served getting into a skilled trade class for a year or so and testing out at the Journeyman level. You certainly will earn significantly more in a skilled trade than you will with a General Studies Degree.
Even if a lot of the required classes for health sciences can be taken in the general studies degree? Because it’s like a “customizable” degree. So I can take the courses that I think are most important which are health, medical, or biology related
Yes, even if... thing is, the declared major most business will focus on especially if you are going into the medical field. Unless you are planning on adding your Master’s, you would be better of focusing.
Don’t rush. I was In college for a BA from 2006-2013. It’s better to figure out what classes will most help you then getting BS classes and haven’t learn anything and no nothing about your industry. A degree is just paper, your knowledge and skills is what truly is important
My sisters work in the government with a regular degree. If you just want to be financially sound and happy what more can you ask for after your done school? Unless you want to pursue a masters and find a more specified field... speak to an academic advisor about that.
I don't really have a good answer. It would mean more from a higher quality institution than a run of the mill university. A degree will open doors for you. What those doors are depends on you.
Well, it will allow you to "check a box" for a degree, but it does not give you any specific skills. If I were interviewing you I would think you took this program just to avoid any hard coursework (sorry if that is not true, but it is my perception).
How much debt will you have? Can you add some kind of skill or certification with this program?
I would say, no, General Studies is not enough, unless you are aiming to be a grade school teacher. Study more specialized STEM, although it is noticeably harder.
